**The role**:
You will be a Principal Legal Officer and report to the General Counsel, Office of the Commissioner. This role provides authoritative advice and develops options, policies, strategies and initiatives for complex legal issues.

**Your responsibilities will include**:
Provide high level legal, governance, complaints and compliance advice and coordinate the engagement and provision of services by external legal service providers for more complex issues;
Provide legal assistance in policy development by identifying legal issues for consideration by policy officers;
Represent the organisation at conferences, interviews, court hearings and meetings where legal qualifications are necessary or desirable;
Develop high quality submissions, briefs, ministerial and commission correspondence, answers to parliamentary Questions on Notice, briefing notes on Cabinet submissions and legal advice for the Commissioner;
Develop and maintain productive relationships with relevant statutory bodies, departments, professional bodies and community groups to ensure successful negotiation on legal matters;
Plan, manage and implement legislative and policy projects;
Lead the development of compliance and enforcement policy and training within the organisation.

Participate in continuing legal education on a regular basis;
Demonstrated ability to engage with staff to develop their appreciation and understanding of the legislative framework that the organisation operates within;
Report all non-compliance issues in accordance with the organisational requirements; and

Demonstrate ethical behaviour and integrity as required by the Public Sector Ethics Act 1994.

Key capabilities

4+ years' PAE;
Demonstrated capability in setting priorities, displaying high motivation, energy, and proactive engagement, both independently and within a dynamic team;
Proficiently handles pressure, meets deadlines, and exhibits sound judgment;
Exhibits the requisite leadership and integrity demanded of a senior professional, adept at handling intricate and delicate matters; and

Showcases exceptional verbal and written communication as well as negotiation proficiencies within a legal context.
