Frankston North has high levels of disadvantage, sitting within Victoria’s highest-ranking postcodes on the disadvantage scale (Dropping off the Edge, 2015). Many young people in this area are impacted by poverty, cyclical unemployment, physical and emotional abuse, substance abuse, family violence and chronic neglect. Without appropriate support, these vulnerable young people will leave school early, abuse drugs or alcohol and/or enter the juvenile justice system. We know if vulnerable young people engage consistently with a mentor over the long term, they will build resilience and self-worth; increase their capacity to develop other positive relationships; stay at school and contribute to their communities. This leads to long-term community benefits and transformational change like a reduction crime, youth unemployment and disadvantage (Big Brothers/Big Sisters, 2015). In response to this The Salvation Army developed a small group youth mentoring network that aims to support young people to develop skills, gain confidence, have fun, make healthy choices and develop a sense of belonging and purpose.

The Youth Mentor team assist people accessing TSA services to develop a positive sense of self and connections within their community. Mentors engage in regular recreational activities with young people in a small group context to facilitate the development of a positive and constructive relationship, reducing isolation and engenders hope for a positive future and active engagement in the community.
- Key responsibilities- As agreed with the tertiary institution, students will observe and support the youth mentoring programs and activities, by practically assisting with the smooth running of programs as well providing administrative support.-
- Students will be required to maintain privacy and confidentiality at all times.-
- Students contribute to ensuring all people and the workplace are safe by always abiding by safe work practices.-
- Keep children safe by always abiding by Salvation Army’s child safe policies and code of conduct.- Qualifications and skills (desired/required)- Be enrolled in a recognised Tertiary Educational Institute / RTO and enter into a formal Placement Agreement with The Salvation Army (TSA).-
- Students must be currently undertaking the final stages of tertiary study in a related field-
- Experience in a relevant field highly regarded-
- A sound knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is highly desiredCapabilities and personal attributes

- Make Sound Decisions: Actively seeks out input from others and shares own ideas to achieve best outcomes; makes sound, timely decisions leading to effective service delivery.
- Demonstrate Accountability: Demonstrates accountability aligned to internal and external requirements; supports and acts in compliance with the records, information and knowledge management requirements of TSA.
- Think Analytically and Solve Problems: Identifies issues that may hinder completion of tasks and finds appropriate solutions; willingly seeks out input from others and shares own ideas to achieve best outcomes; identifies ways to improve systems or processes which are used by the team/unit/department.
