Fellow - Cardiology - Interventional Cardiology

**The Position**:
We are currently looking for multiple full-time Fellow/Senior Registrars in Interventional Cardiology to join the dynamic team at Canberra Hospital for a 12-month contract with possible extension.
The Department of Cardiology is a well-established service with 14 consultant medical staff positions, four Accredited Cardiology Advanced Trainees, and two Unaccredited Cardiology Advanced Trainees, in addition to Basic Physician Trainees and other Junior Medial Officers. They work as part of a large multidisciplinary team including specialist nursing staff, cardiac physiologists, cardiac sonographers, administrative staff, and the cardiac rehabilitation team.
Under limited direction of the Cardiology Unit Director and Director of Training you will perform:
1. Interventional Procedures:
- Independently perform a wide range of interventional cardiology procedures, including but not limited to angioplasty, stent placement, and coronary interventions. Assist with TAVI and PFO/ASD closures and adjunct therapies such as IVUS, OCT, FFR, Shockwave and Rotablation.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive patient assessment and optimal procedural outcomes.
- Participate in Primary PCI service with consultant supervision, including out of hours on a rotational roster.
2. Clinical Care:
- Provide high-quality, evidence-based care to cardiology patients, with a focus on interventional procedures and post-procedural management.
- Participate in ward rounds, consultations, and contribute to the development of patient care plans.
- Contribute to Advanced Trainee cardiology on-call service (1 in 14 shared rosters at 26 days per year and 4 weekends a year).
3. Education and Training:
- Mentor junior medical staff, residents, and medical students in interventional cardiology techniques and patient management.
- Engage in continuous professional development and stay updated on the latest advancements in interventional cardiology.
4. Research and Quality Improvement:
- Actively participate in ongoing cardiology research projects, contributing to the generation of new knowledge and advancements in the field.
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, ensuring the highest standards of care and patient safety.
5. Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues within the cardiology department, other specialties, and allied health professionals.
- Maintain open communication with patients and their families, ensuring a patient-centered approach to care.
- Commit to own ongoing professional development and actively contributes to professional memberships and networks.
- Display honesty, integrity, and respect for all patients, carers, and staff.
**Health Service**:
Canberra Health Services (CHS) delivers tertiary cardiology and cardiac intervention services to an estimated 620,000 individuals living in the ACT and surrounding Southern NSW Local Health Districts. Consumers accessing Cardiology in Building 5 include adults of all ages, acuity, frailty, and disability, who may present for diagnosis and treatment for a range of acute and chronic cardiac conditions.
The coronary care unit is a 19-bed unit which has over 2000 admissions annually. The cardiology outpatient service provides up to 4,500 episodes of care annually with increasing demand each year. There is a close working relationship with our cardiothoracic surgical unit.
The Interventional Cardiology Service includes two dedicated cardiac catheter laboratories which undertake over 800 coronary interventional procedures and over 1,600 angiography procedures annually. It provides a 24/7 service for primary PCI for acute ST elevation myocardial infarction for the region. A structural heart disease program is being developed. The service also provides simple and complex cardiac device implantation service and follow up. Clinical cardiac electrophysiology services were commenced in April 2019 with complex ablation procedures.
Construction is underway for a state-of-the-art Heart Care Centre, incorporating Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery services in the Acute Cardiac Care Unit (ACCU) and Interventional Cardiology Laboratory (ICL) as part of the Canberra Hospital Expansion Project (scheduled for completion in 2024).
