We have an exciting position available for a Research Associate to join WASM: Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering working with the School researchers and the Curtin Corrosion Centre to support the ongoing activity within this area.

**Your new role**

Sustainable management of mining-influenced water (MIW) and mine wastes are critical enablers of the future critical minerals industry. The move towards zero waste in mining would require all mining water discharged will be pristine or otherwise valuable to communities, and reprocessing or repurposing of tailings and mine wastes to reduce environmental impact and unlock economic benefits.

Assoc Prof Richard Alorro has spent his career to date working on innovative technologies that could offer solutions to water and waste problems in mining. These research projects include the use of bi-metallic particles to recover potentially toxic and valuable metals from solution, and recovery of critical metals from tailings and slag. Early findings highlighted the potential of bi-metallic particles to treat mining influenced water (MIW), particularly acid mine drainage. This work was a finalist in the Curtin innovation Awards 2023. Findings on the extraction of critical metals, such as nickel and cobalt, from non-ferrous slag, also showed great potential, achieving high recovery rates at mild conditions.

The MIW and mine waste projects can offer opportunities for multiple students to be involved (UG and PG final year students) and contribute significantly to the learning and teaching portfolio of the WASM: MECE.

This position of Research Associate is to support the lead researcher, Assoc Prof Richard Alorro in collecting data, managing the mining-influenced water MIW and mine waste projects, and co-supervising students.

**As the Research Associate, you will be responsible for**:

- Deliver high quality teaching to undergraduate students and involvement in honours and/or graduate level teaching where appropriate.
- Conduct tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and/or studio sessions, as appropriate, which stimulate and foster student learning.
- Contribute to research output, normally as part of a research group.
- Publish/exhibit in high quality journals/outlets (often in collaboration with colleagues) in manner consistent with disciplinary practice.
- Disseminate research findings through seminars, workshops, and conferences.
- Provide support for project funding by assisting with proposal writing, identifying opportunities for leveraging resources, and actively seeking project funds.
