This is an opportunity for you as a First Nations person. This role is in the Education business unit as an APS 4 Education Officer and is an affirmative measures position that is only open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

You will join a cohort of First Nations people employed at the Museum in different sections and at various levels who we are enthusiastic about supporting in your aims, aspirations, and achievements.

We have a First Nations First Strategy which aims to increase the inclusion of First Nations communities and people, particularly in our local and regional areas alongside the telling of First Nations stories, nationally and internationally.

In 2023 we began implementing a First Nations Employment and Professional Career Development program that includes career pathways, significant supports for First Nations staff, including professional mentorship, career planning, a Senior First Nations Advisor for individual support and mentorship and a cultural program of internal Talking Circles, cultural gatherings, a self-determined First Nations Staff Network Gathering, which will engage across the APS and beyond. In addition, you will be able to identify training, learning, study, personal and interpersonal development through your own individual First Nations Professional Career Development Plan that you self-determine for your work/life balance and career development.

You will be part of a team of educators and program developers that plan and deliver curriculum aligned programs to primary and secondary school groups who visit the Museum from across Australia. The programs are associated with the Museum’s collections, exhibitions, ideas, and themes such as civics and citizenship, social and cultural history and environmental sustainability and other stories about Australia’s past and present. There is a significant proportion of First Nations content in all our delivered programs including specifically focused First Nations exhibitions and our shared histories.

You will do administrative tasks including communicating program and event information across the Museum and be part of evaluating these programs. You will liaise with teachers, students, and members of the public on a regular basis.

Your training and induction into the Museum will equip you with additional knowledge and skills to do this work at this level, especially training in the delivery of the specific education programs that occur daily.

You will be supported by your manager, the team, and the Executive of the Museum to grow, engage, learn, and achieve the aims of your career in a very supportive and caring environment as a First Nations employee, bringing you into a network of First Nations employees that support each other.

Note: This position may require some work on weeknights, weekends, and public holidays. It may also involve some strenuous physical activity and interstate travel from time to time.
