Barrier Attendants

The Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) is the traditional home of thoroughbred racing in Queensland and maintains two race tracks (Eagle Farm and Doomben) as well as a training centre at Deagon. We are the leading metropolitan racecourse in Queensland that sees thousands of patrons coming to the racecourse to enjoy the hospitality and quality entertainment. The BRC hosts 70+ racedays every year with several events on each day, and 50+ special events (weddings, conferences and corporate meetings etc.).

**What are Barrier Attendants?**

Barrier Attendants perform a crucial role to load horses safely into the starting barriers in addition to providing vital support to jockeys/rides and horses.

**Responsibilities of the Role**
- Work on alternating Race days across midweeks (e.g., Wednesdays) and Saturdays in a casual capacity.
- Handle and load horses into the barriers in a safe, timely and efficient manner.
- Assist jockeys/riders with their mounts including behind and within the starting barriers.
- Handle horses for gear adjustments, farrier attention etc.
- Adjust gear on horses as required.
- Assist with catching riderless horses.
- Adhere to Work Health & Safety procedures including always wearing the applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and uniform.
- Report all incidents, hazards, and breaches of rules.
- Other tasks as directed.

**Requirements, Skills & Experience**
- Previous horse handling experience is required (thoroughbred specific experience is desirable).
- Previous experience working as a barrier attendant is advantageous.
- Reliable and hard-working approach.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team under direction.
- A strong understanding and ability to assess health and safety in all situations.
- Minimum 18 years old.
- Please note this is a physically demanding role requiring the ability to handle and maneuver horses in a safe and efficient manner.
