In the role of Transport Inspector you will maximise the safety of all transport users and protect Queensland road infrastructure by influencing the public and industry to ensure compliance with all relevant legislation. The role balances education and quality customer service with enforcement.
The Customer Services Branch delivery network comprises five geographic regions (SEQ North, SEQ South, Southern, Central & Northern) as well as the Customer Service Direct (CS Direct) Unit. Each region has a Regional Compliance Unit which is responsible for the implementation of operational initiatives that focus on ensuring the compliance of the transport industry sector by activities including:

- Educating the public and industry on transport compliance issues;
- Undertaking vehicle registration and safety inspections;
- Auditing of industry operators;
- Investigating suspected breaches of the legislation and preparing briefs of evidence;
- Auditing and investigating accreditation schemes; and
- Enforcing compliance with mass, fatigue, dangerous goods, and excess dimension and load restraint standards.

The Regional Compliance Unit works closely with internal and external key stakeholders such as the Queensland Police Service and relevant road transport industry bodies in the effective delivery of compliance programs.

**Accountabilities include**:

- Advise, train and educate members of the public, transport industry and other government agencies in relation to legislation, procedure and standards to encourage and ensure road use compliance and road safety.
- Planning and performing surveillance, interceptions, inspections, audits and investigations relating to compliance monitoring, complaints and potential breaches of legislation.
- Undertake programmed and non-programmed vehicle inspection activities relating to licensing and accreditation. Use specialised equipment in the inspection and testing of on-road vehicles.
- Plan and conduct audits of individuals and organisations conducting activities on behalf of the department and recommend education, further investigation or enforcement action.
- Prepare reports including offence reports, investigation reports and briefs of evidence using computer technology and office systems.
- Provide advice to Senior Transport Inspectors regarding evidence of possible breaches of legislation and recommend suitable enforcement action.
- Represent the Department at court hearings and provide advice on matters relating to offences.
- Monitor practices and trends relating to road use compliance and road safety, provide operational input into the development of compliance strategies for the region and recommend amendments to legislation, policies, strategies and procedures to improve compliance outcomes.

**The successful applicant will be required to**:

- Work irregular hours on a non-continuous shift basis. Night and week-end work will be involved;
- Wear and maintain uniforms provided by the Department;
- Travel for extended periods throughout the region or state as directed;
- Work under isolated and adverse conditions, which could include attending vehicle accidents;
- Lift and use testing equipment (e.g. electronic weighing devices).

The successful applicant/s will be provided with comprehensive on the job training as well as Senior First Aid. In addition successful applicant/s will be provided training to a standard which will allow them to perform Programmed Vehicle Inspections. This position reports to the Senior Transport Inspector and has zero direct reports.
