**About the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations**

**The Role**
Reporting to the Senior Economist, the Economist is responsible for conducting analysis of the Australian economy and labour market to support employment services policy development and program implementation. This position requires the ability to work in a team environment to conduct original economic analysis, provide high quality economic briefing and advice to stakeholders, and author occasional papers and reports.
**Duties and Responsibilities**
Responsibilities of the APS Level 5 may include:
- Contributing to the department’s understanding of how economic events and government policy decisions impact the employment services system.
- Deepening the empirical evidence base informing the development of the next generation of labour market policies and programs helping Australians into employment.
- Conducting analysis of economic issues using a variety of macro and micro data sources.
- Contribute to a regular suite of economic updates, fact sheets and other publications across the department including the Leading Indicator of Employment.
- Managing longer term projects with support from the Senior Economist.
- Performing other ad-hoc duties as assigned by the Senior Economist and the Director.
**Qualifications and Education**
A degree or major in economics will be highly regarded.
