Are you experienced in undertaking routine analysis of quantitative genomic data sets? We are currently seeking a motivated Quantitative Geneticist, with a focus on aquaculture, to join our dynamic ‘Agriculture & Food’ business unit in Hobart, and it could be the next exciting career step you’re looking for

CSIRO’s aquaculture research provides vital R&D capabilities for the commercial aquaculture sector in Australia and globally, and strives to boost the value, competitiveness and sustainability of the industry through integrated studies of genetics, physiology, health, aquafeeds, environments and food science. Joining our talented ‘Aquaculture Applied Breeding Team’, the Quantitative Geneticist in this role will be responsible for supporting a portfolio of commercial breeding programs and related research projects. The research portfolio has a focus across multiple species of finfish, molluscs and crustaceans, with stakeholders located both in Australia and internationally.

In this hands-on role, you will collaborate with a range of other multi-disciplinary teams across CSIRO to draw expertise to work at the interface of quantitative genetics, genomics, data systems development and applied breeding to support the expanding aquaculture sector. Supporting this portfolio of applied aquaculture selective breeding programs, your primary focus would be the effective management and analysis of quantitative data across multiple species. **Your duties will include**:

- Analysing large quantitative genetic and genomic data sets, and assisting in the incorporation of the results into commercial breeding decisions.
- Contributing to the design of breeding programs and experiments to support such research programs, involving quantitative genetic and genomic data.
- Using research and/or industry experience to formulate, develop and implement applied breeding activities.
- Working in a research project environment characterised by milestone driven delivery to commercial clients, and collaborating with project teams to ensure delivery of applied breeding research program outcomes in accordance with agreed timeframes and budget.
- Publishing the results of research outcomes in peer reviewed scientific journals, as well as communicating research results to clients and the scientific community through oral and written reports.
- Acting as a trusted advisor, utilising knowledge of aquaculture client’s business and understanding of their underlying needs.

**To be considered you will need**:

- A PhD, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and relevant research experience, in statistical or quantitative genetics, or related field.
- Ability to analyse and interpret quantitative genetics data, including genomic data, to meet the needs of commercial breeding programs.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multi-disciplinary and regionally dispersed teams.
- Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability and willingness to align to the commercial delivery focus of the applied breeding team.
