Support investigations into allegations of non-compliance against a range of Commonwealth environmental legislation.

**Who we are**
We are looking for experienced compliance officers to join the newly formed Approvals Compliance Section, responsible for investigating and responding to allegations of non-compliance with approvals and permits issued under national environmental law. This function will transition to the new Environment Protection Australia (EPA), who will become responsible for compliance and enforcement under new national environmental laws, holding proponents to account for their information, decisions, and undertakings. Between now and the stand-up of the EPA you will have an opportunity to contribute to the design of the EPA, the new national environmental laws, and transition to the operation of the EPA.

**The Job**
- Undertake investigations into allegations of non-compliance against a range of Commonwealth environmental legislation.
- Travel, sometimes to remote locations to perform site inspections as part of investigations.
- Contribute to engagement with program areas within the Department, state regulators and industry bodies across Australia to deliver compliance outcomes.
- Collect and evaluate evidence, preparing high-quality briefing material to support decision-makers, and recommending appropriate responses identified non-compliance.
- Contribute to development of practical and innovative solutions to address a wide range of issues relating to compliance and assurance activities.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the policies and process that underpin the work of the Section.

- Experience working in a regulatory or compliance focussed environment with a demonstrated ability to conduct compliance activities in the office and in the field.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, and excellent people skills.
- Strong analytical skills, including experience administering legislation and demonstrated ability to shape strategic thinking and solve complex problems.
- Proven ability to develop productive relationships with colleagues and across government and industry stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to an effective team and a commitment to an inclusive team culture.

**Desirable qualifications**
- Knowledge of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
- Knowledge of environmental management issues or environmental qualifications (desirable).
- Certificate IV in Government Investigations (or the ability to gain this qualification within 6 months).
- An understanding of the principles underpinning Administrative Law.

Note, the successful applicant must hold and maintain a current manual driver’s licence and ability

to drive a 4WD vehicle

**Eligibility and other requirements**

**Citizenship**
- To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.

**Security Clearance**
- This position requires a
**Baseline Vetting** security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
