**About the Legal Metrology Branch **:The Legal Metrology Branch plays an important role in ensuring Australian consumers and industry can rely on trusted measurements for fair trade in goods and services. To ensure traders comply with the law and adopt correct measurement trading practices, we employ inspectors who check that measuring instruments (for example, weighing scales, fuel pumps and weighbridges) are accurate throughout Australia, pre-packaged articles contain the correct amount of produce, and that fuel sold in service stations complies with quality standards.

**About the section **:The Policy and Regulatory Services Section provides timely, accurate and appropriate support for the Secretary and Chief Metrologist, including advice and services relating to measurement policy, regulatory and technical matters. This enables the delivery of a strong and effective national measurement system that is trusted and accepted domestically and internationally and does not impose unnecessary barriers to trade through restrictive requirements.

**The opportunity**:
Reporting to the Senior Licensing Officer and Manager, Licensing and Appointments Unit, the position supports the delivery of NMI’s regulatory activities for Trade Measurement Licensing, Legal Metrology Authority and Utility Meter Verifier appointments under National Measurement legislation.

- Sound knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly acquire a detailed knowledge of legislation, compliance, enforcement, policies and procedures relating to legal metrology appointments, public weighbridge and servicing licences.
- High level accuracy and attention to detail to deliver licensing and appointment activities that support technical regulatory functions.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain productive and collaborative working relationships within a small team.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise tact and discretion together with demonstrated commitment to professional values including teamwork, continuous improvement, and performing effectively under high workload conditions.
- Case management skills including research, analysis, judgement, problem solving, decision making, planning and organising.
- Demonstrated ability to engage with and resolve complex issues, think strategically and undertake analysis to inform policy development in new and existing areas.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills to support effective engagement and develop professional relationships with industry, community stakeholders and government stakeholders.

Experience operating in a regulatory and compliance environment is highly desirable.

**What you will do**:
Primary duties and responsibilities that are typically performed in this role:

- Monitor licensee performance and where necessary initiate, implement and support compliance and enforcement activities specific to licensees.
- Identifying and making recommendations for improvements to the Branch’s CRM system, to support various operational and compliance related activities as directed.
- Identifying and contributing to new initiatives and strategies to improve the performance of the licensing administrative and compliance programs.
- Facilitating the importation, analysis and reporting of verified measuring instrument data in support of compliance related activities as directed.
- Making decisions and liaising with licensees with some autonomy regarding issues with verification notification forms that have been submitted to NMI.
