Laboratory Technician

Firbank Grammar School is seeking a dedicated Laboratory Technician to join our Senior School Science Department on a permanent basis.

This is an** ongoing, full-time, term time only role **(FTE 0.82), commencing in Term 1 2025 (January 28th). This position is** Monday - Friday, 8am - 4pm **with a 30-minute lunch break.

**Overview**:
This role provides vital support and assistance for our teaching staff when implementing the practical science component of the curriculum. You will be collaborating with the Head of Science to ensure that equipment is safely and appropriately prepared for both Junior (Years 7-10) and VCE science classes. You will be welcomed into a supportive science faculty who share a passion for science, aiming to provide all students with an exceptional education where they feel free to aspire and achieve.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Timely preparation of laboratory equipment and materials for Junior Science classes and VCE classes as allocated.
- Employing safe work practices in the science laboratory, abiding by the Hazardous Substances regulation, including preparing and updating Rish Assessments.
- Implementing and maintaining appropriate storage, handling and/or disposal of dangerous or toxic substances in accordance with Dangerous Goods regulations.
- Maintain clean, safe and efficient storage, with an inventory of equipment and resources.
- Demonstrate procedures and assist in practical classes, under teacher supervision.
- Test equipment and experiments to ensure readiness for student experiments.
- Care for flora and fauna within the science department.
- Ordering of equipment and materials (in liaison with teaching staff) and contribute to the preparation of the department budget.

**Experience and Qualifications**:

- Certificate or diploma in Laboratory Technology, Science, or a related field.
- Experience in a similar Lab Technician role in a school laboratory or similar environment, particularly in supporting science education.
- Demonstrated experience in preparing, setting up, and maintaining science equipment and experiments, including knowledge of safety procedures.
- Understanding of the Australian science curriculum and practical requirements for experiments and demonstrations across multiple year levels.
- Strong work ethic with a proven ability to connect with students and staff.
- Employee Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain).
- First Aid and CPR certificates (or willingness to obtain).
