**About the Department**:
The Department of Industry, Science and Resources and our broader portfolio are integral to the Australian Government’s economic agenda. Our purpose is to help the government build a better future for all Australians through enabling a productive, resilient and sustainable economy, enriched by science and technology. We do this by:

- Growing innovative & competitive businesses, industries and regions
- Investing in science and technology
- Strengthening the resources sector.

**The opportunity**:
The Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR) is seeking expressions of interest for the position of Chair of the Cooperative Research Centres Advisory Committee (the Committee).

The Australian Government’s Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Program fosters high quality research partnerships between businesses and research organisations. It is a proven model for driving industry-led collaborative research partnerships solving industry-identified problems and delivering tangible outcomes. The CRC Program helps to improve the competitiveness, productivity and sustainability of Australian industries.

The CRC Program supports medium to long term collaborations of up to 10 years through CRC Grants ; and short term collaborations of up to 3 years through the CRC Projects (CRC-Ps) which focus on encouraging greater SME involvement in collaborative research.

Since it began in 1991, the CRC Program has committed $5.8 billion to support the establishment of 238 CRCs and 253 CRC Projects. Partners have committed a further $17.4 billion in cash and in-kind contributions.

The Committee is a sub-committee of Industry Innovation and Science Australia (IISA) who advise the Australian Government on innovation, science and research.

The role of the Committee is to provide advice and recommendations to the Minister for Industry and Science on the CRC Program.

The 7 members of the Committee, including the Chair, are appointed by the Minister for Industry and Science in accordance with section 22 of the Industry Research and Development Act 1986 (Cth). Members are appointed for a period of up to 3 years.

Applicants for the position of Chair may also be considered for positions as members of the Committee as future vacancies arise.

The Chair and members of the Committee bring diverse experience and knowledge at the intersection of industry and research, including expertise in science, technology, engineering and/ or business or industry innovation.

To be successful, you will have a strong understanding of collaborative research between industry and research organisations, critical success factors for R&D and the translation, deployment and commercialisation of research outcomes. This includes expertise across various aspects of industry-research collaboration, strategic research partnerships, innovation strategy, R&D investment, intellectual property, market assessment, technology development and industry innovation. The Chair will also have strong experience in corporate governance.
- the ability to work collaboratively and think strategically
- the ability to communicate with influence and negotiate effectively and respectfully
- an understanding of the CRC Program objectives, and Government priorities
- time to commit to the role
- an Australian Government security clearance, or the willingness to obtain a security clearance
- a demonstrated high standard of professionalism, probity and personal integrity

The Chair and members could also bring specialist technical knowledge and experience in one or more of the Government’s National Reconstruction Fund (NRF) priority areas:

- value-add in resources
- value-add in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries
- transport
- medical science
- renewables and low emission technologies
- defence capability
- enabling capabilities

The Chair and members are required to complete declarations of interest prior to assessment rounds. As the Chair and members are excluded from assessments where they have a material conflict of interest, applicants should comment on whether their register of interests would see them excluded from substantial parts of the assessment process.

**The key duties of the position include**:
Committee members will have responsibility to:

- provide advice as required on the ongoing progress and performance of individual CRCs and CRC-Ps, and the operation of the CRC Program.

The Committee Chair is responsible for the leadership of the Committee including:

- ensuring the effective functioning of the Committee
- maintain the integrity of the assessment processes of the Committee, including making all determinations on the materiality of conflict of interest disclosures from members of the Committee
- working with the department on delivery and oversight of the program, including reporting to the IISA Board
