About the John de Laeter Centre and Microscopy and Microanalysis Facility (MMF): The John de Laeter Centre (JdLC) is a core analytical facility of Curtin University, supporting researchers in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Health Sciences. The JdLC Facilities host world-class microanalytical and mass spectrometry instruments that are utilised by academic, government and industry researchers from around the world on applied research projects in the materials, minerals, energy, marine, environmental, forensic and defence industries.

The John de Laeter Centre currently manages over $50 million in research infrastructure distributed across 17 key facilities. On an annual basis, the JdLC employs up to 25 analytical specialists to provide services to > 500 researchers. The JdLC operates over 60 demand-driven research projects per year which contribute ~$2 million of its $5 million operating budget.

The Microscopy and Microanalysis Facility (MMF), a node within the JdLC, houses the electron microscopes (6 SEMs and a TEM), sample preparation laboratories and optical microscopes for the centre. The MMF provides services to academic staff and students throughout the University, other universities, and external companies. The user base is multidisciplinary and diverse. **Your new role**

We are seeking a microscopy expert to undertake the MMF Laboratory Manager role in the JdLC. The position will involve electron microscope instrument operation, user support, technique development, data management/analysis, general laboratory duties (including in the sample preparation laboratories) and administration. The following outlines specific duties of the role:

- Specialise in the operation and maintenance of Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM), related preparation facilities and software.
- Prepare and maintain records, including Occupational Health and Safety for all MMF laboratories.
- Ensure routine maintenance of electron microscopes and equipment, including liaison with external engineers for repairs to MMF equipment.
- Assist MMF users with technical issues, training, record keeping, collection and maintenance of data for research.
- Train individuals on the operation of election microscopes and associated software.
- Operate equipment, conduct analyses, and report results to clients in consultation with the MMF Facility Leader.
- Mentor and train other MMF technical research, and administrative staff, as required.
- Participate in MMF team meetings, providing feedback to the Business Manager, to complete reports, ensuring clients are billed appropriately for services used in MMF.
- Laise with other Curtin areas regarding routine maintenance issues and upgrading of facilities, as required.
- Undertaking additional activities as reasonably expected, aligning with the listed accountabilities and responsibilities.

Selection criteria:

- Essential _
- A BSc or equivalent relevant experience
- Demonstrated experience in operating and maintaining a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and/or other electron microscopes.
- Proven experience and expertise in related analytical techniques (EDS, EBSD, CL, SIMS).
- Demonstrated knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Practices.
- Experience in teaching related to microscopy techniques.
- Desirable _
- Relevant post-graduate qualifications such as a PhD in a microscopy intensive field.
- Ability to operate or work closely with operators of ancillary equipment.
- Experience as a consultant in the field of SEM.
- Demonstrated financial management skills with experience in laboratory procurement.
- Ability to teach electron microscopy short courses and provide one-to-one training in the operation of equipment.
