**POSITION OVERVIEW**:
An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Cytology department of ACT Pathology for a suitable scientist to join our team as a trainee Cytotechnologist. This position would potentially suit a new graduate or an individual with previous experience in haematology morphology or cytogenetics. The successful applicant must be self-motivated and passionate about learning, highly organised, with an eye for detail and possess high standards for quality and accuracy.
ACT Pathology is a business unit of the Canberra Health Services with laboratories located at both the Canberra Hospital and Calvary Public Hospital operating 24 hours, 7 days a week all year round and Collection Centres located at seven other sites. Pathology provides diagnostic and consultative services to medical specialists and general practitioners and their patients in hospital and in the community.
The Anatomical Pathology Department operates a service which encompasses Histology, Cytology, Mortuary Services and Administration. The Cytology department processes CST, FNA and exfoliative samples and your role will be to participate in the day-to-day operation of the laboratory, working as part of a dedicated Cytology team.
**DUTIES**:
Under direction of the Supervising Scientist of Cytology you will undertake procedures in the Cytology as required:
You will:
- Prepare cytological specimens as required.
- Ensure the maintenance of a clean and safe working environment in accordance with Workplace Health and Safety regulations.
- Assist in training and supervision of staff and workflow within the Cytology Preparation laboratory as required.
- Participate in internal QA processes for scientists, registrars and pathologists including auditing/writing SOPs for the Preparation Laboratory Manuals.
- Undertake training for the primary screening of gynaecological and non-gynaecological specimens and prepare written reports on the findings.
- Attend FNA specimen collection procedures, perform Rapid Onsite Evaluations (ROSE) and provide advice to radiologists on specimen suitability and type of further tests required (undertaken with supervision).
- Be committed to working towards gaining the CT ASC (Non-gynae and/or Gynae) within 4 years of starting this trainee role.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

**Position Requirements/Qualifications**:
Mandatory
Degree in Laboratory Medical Science (BAppSC Lab Med) or equivalent qualifications
Committed to working towards gaining the CT ASC (Non-gynae and/or Gynae) within 4 years of starting this trainee role.
The successful applicant will need to be available for weekend and after-hours work.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.

- Obtain a Compliance Certificate from OMU (Occupational Medicine Unit) relating to assessment, screening, and vaccination processes against specified infectious diseases.
