The Australian Climate Accountability Project has been established within the Australian Human Rights Institute at UNSW to:

- increase knowledge about the contribution of greenhouse gas emissions from Australia’s exported coal and LNG to specific, climate-related harms threatening the rights of vulnerable human communities and population groups in Australia;
- harness that knowledge to raise awareness about the need for a national plan for a just, human rights-protecting and Paris-aligned phase-out of these export sectors; and
- provide a human rights-based model framework for other fossil fuel exporting advanced economies.

The RA will work closely with the Project Lead during State 1 (Research) of the project: ‘Documenting the harms, activating the rights’. The Project will begin by liaising with

This role will:

- Attend research meetings and training sessions and take minutes.
- Respond to routine enquiries relating to research.
- Perform data collection entry, and analysis.
- Maintain research databases, records and publication registers.
- Conduct statistical data reporting.
- Recruit study participants and conduct survey mail outs.
- Transcribe interviews.
- Organise fieldwork arrangements.
- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others. A person engaged is generally expected to have the following skills and experience:

- Completion of a degree.
- Prior experience supporting a research project.

We are seeking a casual Research Assistant (RA) to assist with specific aspects of our work. The RA will be with the Project through Stage 1, with the possibility of continuing beyond that. This is essentially from mid-May to end-November 2023. The RA’s role is to help the Project Lead to:

- Develop and manage the empirical research project with CA.
- and human rights-related effects in Australia.
- Integrate the research findings into two representative scenarios and a Rights Report.
- Assist with the preparation of a multi-sectoral, multidisciplinary National Symposium.

The RA needs to be unafraid of cross-disciplinary work, have a background in human rights law or practice, be competent in legal research and have very good writing skills. A level of knowledge about climate change and the energy transition would be beneficial but is not essential. The Hub is flexible as to the number of days allocated for this project, which may be extended as required.
