**About the Team**
The system safety engineering team supports the entire business in the delivery of large-scale projects, currently with a focus on vehicles. This rapidly growing team is headquartered at a recently established site in Brisbane and hence offers unique opportunities to influence setup and execution of the system safety work and for professional growth.
**About the Role**
The Systems Safety Principal/Team Manager is responsible for assuring the safety and conformance with legislation of products provided by Rheinmetall Defence Australia and for managing the team of System Safety managers, engineers and analysts.
As **Systems Safety Principal,** you can anticipate some of your day-to-day tasks to include:
- Responsibility for Product Safety as delegated by company management, including escalation of RDA Product Safety matters as required;
- Leadership and governance of Product Safety across RDA development programs, assuring compliance with RDA Product Safety processes and establishment/satisfaction of safety requirements;
- Carry out and/or lead highly complex engineering assignments requiring advanced system safety knowledge and expertise;
- Lead, direct, review, approve for release and coordinate preparation of project documentation to ensure customer contract and company requirements are met (including System Safety Program Plans, Safety Case Reports). Develop safety requirements and safety statements for complex designs which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity;
- Document safety statements, in accordance with product safety standards and methodologies;
- Participate in and/or lead formal and informal System Safety Committees, Working Groups and Reviews, including chairing Core Safety Group as required;
- Represent the organisation as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects in product safety;
- Interact with senior external personnel on complex technical matters often requiring coordination between organisations;
- Collaborate with other engineering disciplines to agree appropriate controls to mitigate risks to product safety;
- Coach and mentor staff to develop their skills and capabilities;
- Develop and improve RDA-wide Product Safety Management System, policies and processes including project effort estimates for product safety;
- Ensure training of Rhm staff and oversee adherence to company policies and procedures;
- Lead RDA-wide (Product) Safety Culture initiatives and identify and implement business improvement initiatives. Seek new methods and techniques to manage compliance risk and stakeholder relationships;
- Lead/manage transition of safety assurance capability between Germany and Australia;
- Provide specialist advice as required;
- Oversee system safety training to Rhm personnel for all safety processes where relevant;
- Leadership and management of system (product) safety staff;
- Directing recruitment of competent staff for the Product Safety Team;
- Establish and maintain a training program for the Product Safety Team to ensure the required skill sets are acquired and maintained;
- Establish and maintain an overview of the funding stream (three-year rolling projection) for each position in the Product Safety Team;
- Ensure that the Product Safety Team sets the standard in terms of compliance; and
- Any other duties as required.

The experience and skillset best suited to this role includes:
- Tertiary qualification in Engineering recognised by The Institute of Engineers Australia;
- Registration with Board of Professional Engineers Queensland/Victoria;
- Advanced ability to effectively manage multiple, concurrent activities, while understanding and managing priorities, dependencies and extensive risk;
- Substantive leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to drive innovation and lead change;
- Demonstrated experience in managing team size of 10-15 team members;
- Ability to travel interstate and/or internationally when required; and
- Hold or be eligible to gain the appropriate Australian Security Clearance if required.
