**The Role**
Within the Work Health and Safety function an APS 6 Work Health and Safety Officer is accountable under broad direction to undertake complex work health and safety activities. They will work within a framework of legislation, established principles, work practices and procedures in accordance with Defence’s mission and business objectives. They will work with independence having the authority and discretion to investigate and gather information from diverse sources and explore new ideas and different viewpoints to support the longer-term business objectives.

An APS 6 Work Health and Safety Officer will have considerable stakeholder engagement and will identify relevant stakeholders’ expectations and concerns to develop a clear understanding of the methodology and practices to achieve business outcomes.

**About our Team**
An APS6 Work Health and Safety Officer may be a team coach or lead a small operational team and is expected to be capable of reviewing the quality of work undertaken by others within a work group. They are accountable for organising workflow and for making decisions in relation to the work area and team plans. They may exercise the associated people or financial responsibilities to achieve outcomes. They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
- Accountable for research and analysis activities to identify and address work health and safety risks to capability.
- Develop and implement work health and safety programs.
- Contribute to implementation and continuous improvement of work health and safety management systems in accordance with legislation and Defence policies.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders on complex and sensitive work health and safety issues.
- Evaluate activities and processes for compliance with work health and safety legislation, policies and procedures.
- Resolve problems using professional expertise, taking the initiative to identify alternative courses of action and implications for work health and safety activities.
