The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) is an independent statutory authority responsible for preparing and conducting criminal prosecutions in Victoria on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Matters prosecuted by the DPP and the OPP involve serious crimes or matters that are of significance to the fair and effective operation of the Victorian criminal justice system. The OPP consists of the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions and a staff of approximately 465 providing legal and corporate support to the DPP, the Chief Crown Prosecutor and Crown Prosecutors in the exercise of their independent roles in the criminal justice system.

The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) has multiple opportunities to join our organisation as a Principal Solicitor within our Trial Divisions.

These positions have a primary responsibility for the preparation and conduct of the most highly complex matters for early resolution or trial in all jurisdictions - Magistrates' Court, County and Supreme Courts.

The incumbent will work in a dynamic environment with changing priorities and should possess the ability to work in an agile manner, contributing to and embracing innovative solutions and ways of working.

They also have a responsibility for providing guidance, support, and mentorship to staff within the office. The incumbent will be aware of their obligations to victims and witnesses in line with the Victims Charter Act 2006. They will engage with victims and witnesses to meet the individual justice needs, tailored to and in alignment with the complexity of matters.

Flexible working arrangements including part time arrangements will be considered.

**About the Role**:

- Undertake high level research, investigation and analysis of the most highly complex legal issues and provide written and verbal advice and recommendations as required to external agencies, counsel, OPP staff, Crown Prosecutors, the OPP executive, and the Director of Public Prosecutions to ensure the effective prosecution of cases.
- Initiate policy review / development, identification of issues and trends, and resolution of problems in the prosecution of the most highly complex criminal cases.
- Advise management on issues arising from the prosecution of criminal cases, resources, and points of law, and provide detailed reports as requested.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively identify and respond to emerging issues at both a strategic and operational level in a changing legal environment.
- Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to communicate at an influential level with relevant stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to formally and effectively mentor staff to foster continuous learning and development and aid in their professional development.

The position is Melbourne based; however occasional regional travel may be a requirement of the position. A vehicle and overnight accommodation are provided as required.
