Our client is a **newly established Commonwealth government department** focused on delivering the Australian Government’s climate change and energy agenda and to protect our environment and water resources.

You’ll join the** Science Program Team**, which works in partnership with state and territory governments, and science organisations to identify, plan and invest in science projects that inform water infrastructure investments across the country. The Science Program is delivering nearly $50 million in research projects to provide an evidence base for future water infrastructure and improve water security. This includes an exciting suite of projects to progress new and emerging technologies such as managed aquifer recharge and greater use of brackish groundwater.

**The Opportunity**:
There is an **EL1 Assistant Director** position available in the team that focuses **on strategic science and policy.***

This role will provide you with the opportunity to:

If you are currently a permanent APS staff member, you can be engaged on a **temporary 12-month transfer.** Otherwise, you can be engaged on a **12-month non-ongoing contract.**

**The Role**:
Twice per year, the team seeks proposals from state and territory governments to fund new and innovative research projects that aim to improve our water security and infrastructure prospects. This EL1 provides strategic policy advice on the proposals received to ensure they further the national impact of the work of the Science Program. The EL1 also provides scientific advice on the current research projects that are being managed by the team.

You will be responsible for developing briefings for the executive, the Minister and other areas of the department/other agencies as needed (both oral and written).

Your role will involve liaising with stakeholders, including with science or research organisations, state and territory governments and other Commonwealth departments and agencies.

**The Ideal Person**:
To be successful in this role, you will have a **background in science** with a **relevant qualification in the science field. **It is also essential that you have experience working in state or federal government.***

You will also have:

- The ability to shape strategic thinking by coordinating, analysing and advising on the relevant market (Energy / Climate Change) and related issues
- Influence strategic outcomes through excellent communication skills (particularly in writing) and convey complex issues succinctly to non-expert audiences, including in briefings and submissions for the Minister, the Cabinet and senior executives
- The ability to distil complex scientific information and quickly identify critical issues and formulate appropriate policy responses
- Proactively identify issues, efficiencies and opportunities for reform, and recommend innovative solutions, using critical thinking, sound judgement, your own expertise and an awareness of the broader environment
- Be able to develop productive relationships, work collaboratively and negotiate outcomes with colleagues and stakeholder
- To be eligible for this role, you must be an Australian citizen. You must also have, or be willing to obtain, a Baseline security clearance._

**Salary / Rate**:

- **$115k - $125k + 15.4% super**:

- If you are currently a permanent APS staff member, you can be engaged on a permanent s26 transfer Otherwise, you can be engaged on a 12-month non-ongoing contract with view to permanency
