About us
The Sentencing Advisory Council is an independent statutory body established under the Sentencing Act 1991 (Vic). The work of the Council revolves around providing sound evidence upon which to base sentencing policies and practice, and increasing community confidence in those sentencing policies and practices. The Council conducts research, publishes statistical information, gauges public attitudes, consults with the community, advises government and the courts about sentencing issues, and provides community education in metropolitan and regional Victoria.
About the role
As the Data Analyst, you will be responsible for a range of projects including compiling, analysing and interpreting data for publications. You will support the Manager, Statistical Analysis and contribute to long-term research initiatives focusing on sentencing matters.

**In this role, you will**:

- undertake data entry, extraction and collation of statistics as required from a range of sources
- ensure the integrity and the interpretation of the statistics by maintaining appropriate quality control processes
- contribute to planning and implementation of statistical projects
- interpret and analyse sentencing data for inclusion in legal policy and statistical project reports, working closely with other team members, including those from a non-data or non-statistical background
- prepare research reports with data analysis and commentary for a wide variety of audiences, including the general public and the judiciary.

About you
- strong numeracy, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to use technology such as Excel, R and SPSS to analyse data
- good verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate and summarise complex information
- programming experience in languages such as R, SQL, VBA and Python (would be well regarded).
