**Main purpose of job**:
Consular teams help British people living, travelling, and working around the world when they are most in need and respond rapidly to crises in line with FCDO priorities. Consular and crisis work touches the lives of British people in difficult and sometimes extreme circumstances, and this is one of the few ways that the British public come into contact with the FCDO. Consular and crisis jobs are, therefore, some of the most rewarding in the FCDO.

Working to the Consular Regional Operations Manager based in Canberra, this role will oversee the full range of consular work in Australia: providing assistance to vulnerable British nationals; delivering Consular Directorate's prevention strategy; and leading on consular crisis preparation and response.

**Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?**:
This is an exciting, stretching and busy role. As Country Manager you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of Consular delivery and supporting the implementation of the UK’s consular strategy across Australia.
In particular, you will:

- Work with Vice-Consuls in 4 Consulates (Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney) to ensure consistent delivery of resilient and effective consular services to British people.
- Lead on ensuring appropriate staffing levels and that staff are fully trained in their roles to deliver quality consular services.
- Develop case management strategies for the most complex casework, driving a joined-up approach to help deliver resolutions.
- Identify areas of common need for consular posts in Australia and co-ordinate a collaborative approach to the development, implementation and evaluation of prevention strategies. This may include lobbying for change, expanding partnerships and proactive communications campaigns.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with Australian Federal authorities (Australian Federal Police, Border Force, immigration etc) and other key stakeholders such as likeminded countries, travel and tourism industries, support groups and NGOs.
- Ensure that public information and guidance for British nationals visiting and living in Australia is up to date, accurate, relevant and accessible.
- Lead on consular inputs to Travel Advice for Australia, co-ordinating with political teams.
- Represent consular in Australia at senior level on local boards and committees, contributing on behalf of consular to wider mission initiatives and activities.
- Lead on consular crisis preparation for the Australia network. Ensure teams regularly update and test the consular elements of Post’s Crisis management Plans. Act as Consular Manager during a crisis.

**Resources managed (staff and expenditure)**:
Direct line management of a team of Consular Managers (currently 4 x EO) and Quality Approver for pro consul / consular officers.

Responsible for managing the Australian Consular operational response budget, approx £6000.00 per annum.
