**Who we are**

**Inspector-General of Water Compliance**
The statutory position of the Inspector-General of Water Compliance (the Inspector-General) was established on 5 August 2021 via an amendment to the Water Act 2007 (the Act). The Inspector-General is an independent basin-wide integrity agency and regulator designed to hold governments, including the Australian Government and state governments, to account in meeting their obligations under the Basin Plan.

**Functions and powers of the Inspector-General**
The Inspector-General of Water Compliance has both oversight powers and specific compliance powers relating to areas of water management.The Inspector-General’s oversight powers include the ability to undertake inquiries into how Commonwealth or Basin state agencies are performing their functions under the Water Act and the Basin Plan. The Inspector-General also oversights eleven intergovernmental agreements which implement various elements of the Basin Plan and may conduct audits to assess compliance with the Basin Plan and Water Resource Plans.

Field operations staff are housed within the Media and Engagement team, who are responsible for leading and managing:

- Inspector-General of Water Compliance media and communications, including media and issues management, corporate communications, creative content development and social media
- Day-to-day stakeholder engagement and specialised community engagement activities - such as field days
- Information analysis, intelligence mapping and reporting, including annual survey work across the Basin
- On ground engagement with Basin stakeholders with a view to gather information, intelligence and provide information to stakeholders where required.

Field operations staff are tasked with establishing and maintaining Basin-wide networks and knowledge and identify engagement opportunities in a meaningful and strategic manner. The engagements are undertaken in line with the Inspector-General’s Strategic Plan and ways of working to provide intelligence and awareness the Inspector-General’s responsibilities, work and outcomes.

The role supports and assists the Assistant Director of Intelligence and Engagement to establish and maintain effective communication channels and cooperation with all stakeholders within the Inspector-General’s area of responsibility throughout the Murray-Darling Basin. In turn, engagement information is collated to support the evidence base of the Inspector-General in achieving regulatory objectives. You will undertake direct public-facing work that is field based, sensitive and complex in nature.

**The Job**
The role of the field officer requires highly developed interpersonal skills to navigate engagements with a range of stakeholders on matters which are sometimes sensitive in nature. Being a field officer is an exciting and appealing role, with a requirement to build a network of stakeholders and form relationships based on trust, transparency and accountability.
- Supporting the Director Media and Engagement via the management and coordination of the Assistant Director Intelligence and Engagement.
- In accordance with the outcomes of the Corporate Strategic Plan and Engagement Framework, undertake the day-to-day duties of community and stakeholder engagement across the Basin.
- Coordinate and deliver on-ground community engagement, outreach and public relations activities, both ad hoc and targeted, at Basin-wide field days, major events (such as country shows) with the purpose of raising community awareness and understanding of the role the Inspector-General of Water Compliance.
- Contributing to the gathering of information (including field survey work), preparation of field reports, information analysis, and information migration into intelligence products that provide detailed localised information for the Inspector-General, and the office that supports the Inspector-General.
- Under direction and within the ways of working framework, work with Inspector-General of Water Compliance strategic advisors and Intergovernmental Relations to liaise across Commonwealth and state agencies on matters relating to the Inspector-General’s regulatory objectives.
