Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.

**Job Description**:

- Reporting to the SMC Environmental Manager, the Water Project Specialist is responsible in developing, implementing, and supporting water-related projects to achieve our SIB Projects, Growth Projects, and Sustainable Mining Plan vision of efficient water usage. Collaborating with other technical specialists this role will work on water-related projects to de-risk operational stability, including water security, infrastructure reliability and water use efficiency.

This is a full-time permanent role based in our Brisbane Corporate Office with flexible working arrangements and frequent site travel required.

Key responsibilities:

- Lead and represent Anglo American forums to deliver on Water Stewardship principals
- Lead the Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) certification process under the water protocols
- Accountability of Group Water Standard compliance
- Accountable for Mine Affected Water utility (specifically security and blending), inventory and storage capacity, water use efficiency, sediment and erosion control projects
- Technical and compliance support with focus on site inputs and monitoring for water-related studies that support implementation operational plans and water standards
- Provide technical support, input and expertise to Capital Projects, PSI and Life of Asset Planning, including site implementation and validation of projects
- Development of water projects and targets that support our commitment to being good water stewards in the catchments where we operate
- Coordinate the SMC contract for automated water monitoring and improve performance and standardise across site this system
- Ensure compliance with legislated and internal reporting requirements (WAF+, AWT, etc)
- Provide updates on water reporting dashboards and metrics
- Development and review of groundwater models and mitigation plans across SMC
- Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in engineering, environmental science, hydrology or hydrogeology
- Demonstrated project management experience
- Strong track record with engaging with stakeholders across multiple levels with the business, from Senior Corporate Leaders, site managers and front-line workers
- Demonstrated experience in the resources sector in Australia
- Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing solutions to complex water related operational and environmental issues
- Track record of interfacing with and influencing across all functions of the business
