**Where you'll be working**
John Hunter Children's Hospital (JHCH) is a specialised tertiary referral paediatric hospital in Newcastle, providing complex medical, surgical, major trauma and neonatal care services for Northern NSW.

The Children's Hospital in Newcastle, one of three children's hospitals in NSW, will over the course of a year see almost 25,000 children and young people present to the emergency department, have 9,000 admitted to hospital and perform over 100,000 occasions of service through outpatient clinics.

Other regional hospitals part of the HNEkidshealth Network are Belmont, Cessnock, Maitland, Singleton, Armidale, Tamworth and Manning Hospital.

**What you'll be doing**

The primary role of a NICU Advanced Trainee is provision of care for patients and families in both inpatient and outpatient settings, at a level of skill and autonomy consistent with Advanced Training in Paediatrics. The role includes initial assessment of infants, rational use of investigations, ongoing management and monitoring progress, and organising timely discharge and appropriate follow up.
The Paediatric Advanced Trainee is a senior member of the Junior Medical Staff within a clinical team. In matters relating directly to patient care, he/she is responsible to the Specialist in charge of the patient’s care and the Fellow(s). He/she is responsible for supervision and teaching of Junior Medical Staff on their clinical team, including medical students. The Paediatric Advanced Trainee is a role model for Junior Medical Staff in relation to professional conduct, clinical acumen and communication with patients, families and colleague, including health professionals and staff working in hospital settings
The Advanced Trainee at John Hunter Children’s Hospital will be responsible for the day to day care of patients in the NICU in consultation with the Neonatal Fellow and attending Neonatologist. They will ensure that any significant changes in the condition of the patients are reported, and that any significant changes to the management of the patients are first discussed, with either the Neonatal Fellow or attending Neonatologist.
Advanced trainees will be required to work shift work as per rostering schedule, also work reasonable amounts of overtime as per clinical / handover requirements in accordance with Public Health Medical Officers (State Award)
The position allows Advanced Trainee to:

- gain experience in a wide range of neonatal medical and surgical problems.
- develop expertise in procedural skills and basic and advanced ventilation techniques
- develop communication, leadership and problem-solving skills
- be an integral part of an interdisciplinary team
- contribute to and benefit from the educational and research activities of the Department of Newborn Services
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Registered with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians as an Advanced Trainee or equivalent.
- At least 3 months experience in a level 3 neonatal intensive care.
- Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development. This includes demonstrated ability to teach and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and a commitment to actively contribute to clinical team
- Proven verbal and written communication skills and ability to organise, plan and manage competing tasks.
- Ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment.
