Your part in St Andrew’s War Memorial
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital has a multidisciplinary team of professionals, including doctors, nurses and allied health members. The ICU is a 15 bed unit providing excellence in care of critically ill patients. It has a strong reputation in basic and clinical science in ventilation, echocardiography, and sepsis, with multiple current and previous PhD fellows who have worked clinically in ICU whilst completing higher research degrees.
Reporting to the Director of ICU, the ICU Medical Officer will provide patient care to the Intensive Care Unit and manage Post-Operative including those having cardiothoracic, vascular and neurosurgical procedures, in addition to unplanned emergency admissions from ED, OT and wards.
You will also take part in supervising and teaching medical and nursing staff.
The ICU Medical Officer may be required to:
- Perform a full admission on all patients transferred or admitted to the unit;- Attend and assist ward rounds by the ICU specialists and liaise with the other VMOs as appropriate. They will assist in treating, prescribing and documentation in the patient’s journey through ICU; assist with the management of the critically ill patient whilst awaiting the specialist and assisting her/ him as required- Attend MERT & CODE calls - assisting the ward RMO as required in special occasions- Assist with education programmes for Hospital staff and Medical Students
What makes a difference for us?
- Registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Authority
- Graduate of three years standing from a recognised Medical School
- Minimum of one year ICU experience with some cardiac surgical experience
- The ability to exercise considerable initiative, discretion and judgement in the performance of duties
- The ability to present a caring and understanding attitude at all times to patients and their families
- The ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team environment
- Participate in the Intensive Care Unit teaching
- The ability to provide detailed advice and information on medical services available, responding to patient enquiries utilising a high degree of interpersonal skills
- A desire to progress in ICU training would be an advantage
- Keep up to date with relevant medical and specifically, critical care literature
- Ability to work a rotating roster - 12 hour shifts (8am - 8pm and 8pm - 8am)
