**About the role**:
**The function of the Chemical Drug Intelligence Unit is**:
To analyse non-evidential drug samples (excluding cannabis) prior to destruction, coordinate and maintain a database of drug seizure data of all drugs seized by Victoria Police (excluding cannabis) and provide drug trend information to internal and external stakeholders for law enforcement, drug intelligence, policy, harm reduction, education and research purposes. CDI also provides technical support to the Drug Analysis, Clandestine Laboratories & Botany units, including attending crime scenes in a support role.
In addition, CDI provides a methylamphetamine drug profiling service via the Forensic Services Department Forensic Drug Intelligence Capability Project (FDICP). All methylamphetamine samples are profiled, comparisons made, links established, and intelligence reports produced in conjunction with the Forensic Intelligence Team (FIT).

**As the successful applicant, some of your duties will include**:

- Undertake timely, quality and routine investigative, evidential and/or intelligence casework, attend crime scenes and support evidence processing functions using defined methods and procedures as required.
- Take an active role in the Drug Sciences Group quality management practices including the review of routine quality checks, analysis results and audits.
- Present evidence in Courts of Law as required.
- Make qualified judgements in the provision of specialist advice to key stakeholders.
- Coordinate the daily scheduling, performance, maintenance and troubleshooting of a range of scientific equipment.
- Assist with the supervision and coordination of routine scientific/technical functions which may include leading a small team carrying out such activities.
- Assist with the production of intelligence products and business management reports including data collection, data validation and generation of relevant statistics and trends.
- Provide scientific/technical advice regarding standard procedures to less experienced members and assist in relevant internal and external training activities including the presentation of lectures/demonstrations/tours.
- Assist in relevant research and development projects, which improve and expand Group methodology as part of the Departments standing as a national and internationally recognised ‘centre of excellence'.
- Actively participate in the Drug Sciences Group business improvement program.
- Maintain appropriate knowledge and adhere to Victoria Police policies, procedures, legislation and laboratory accreditation requirements.

Skills & Experience

**As the successful applicant, you will have**:

- Undertake case work and report in own name.
- Convey specialist knowledge and judgement that impacts on legal deliberations and/or investigations including in the court context where opinion evidence is required.
- Deliver discipline related presentations using prescribed methods and procedures in casework.
- Attend, and examine crime scenes, and process related samples.
- Make qualified judgements that impact on the subsequent investigation and legal deliberations associated with casework.
- Assist in research and development, and training and development of staff by communicating professional/scientific/technical concepts.
- Supervise other staff as required.
- Where appropriate interpret results of analysis and undertake technical reviews of casework.
- Monitor and administer local contracts and service agreements within a well-defined service delivery framework.
- Solve problems that may require specialist knowledge in a number of scientific/technical fields.
