**Appeals Convenor**

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) supports the Appeals Convenor in their work through the provision of corporate support services and is the employing authority for staff of the office. Staff of the Office of the Appeals Convenor are functionally separate to DWER and take direction from the Appeals Convenor.

Working closely with a small team in our central Perth CBD location close to shops, cafes and public transport with access to an onsite gym, pool and end of trip facilities.

**Work Related Requirements**
- Significant experience leading a diverse team of professionals manage and ability to champion change.
- Ability to conceptualise, analyse and evaluate information to develop practical solutions and make informed decisions.
- A history of communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders including the ability to gain consensus and commitment from others and resolve issues and conflict.

**Position Statement: Appeals Convenor**

**Purpose and Vision**:
Tasked with a significant role in Western Australia's environmental governance, the Appeals Convenor operates under the Environmental Protection Act 1986. This office aims to ensure the Minister for Environment can deliver an efficient, transparent and evidence based determination of environmental appeals.

**Key Responsibilities**:
**- Investigation and Assessment**: Undertakes comprehensive reviews of environmental appeals, covering a wide range of issues from impact assessments to licensing and vegetation clearing, ensuring every case is evaluated with meticulous attention to detail.

**- Advisory Role**: Acts as a key adviser to the Minister for Environment, offering insights grounded in thorough research to facilitate informed decisions and maintain high environmental standards.

**- Consultation**: Engages and consults with a broad spectrum of stakeholders — industry, government, and the community — to encourage collaborative environmental conservation efforts.

**- Reporting and Recommendations**: Prepares and delivers detailed reports to the Minister for Environment, influencing the shaping of environmental policies and practices across the state.

**Independence and Support**:
DWER's logístical and administrative support, allows the Appeals Convenor to maintain operational autonomy and focus on unbiased, protective and sustainable environmental resolutions.

**Reform and Impact**:
The Appeals Convenor will work with the department and government to evolve Western Australia's environmental approvals system. The role in the reform context will use foresight and innovation to adapt and streamline procedures and minimise delays without sacrificing environmental integrity, addressing the State’s environmental challenges.
