Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North-West Queensland and Western Australia.

In recognition of the shift to a fully integrated organisation, Steelmaking Coal (SMC) requires whole of mine management of Geotechnical Engineering across all operations. This will enable SMC to maintain a strong focus in delivering product sustainably and safely.

This is a full-time permanent position based in our Brisbane Corporate Office with flexible working arrangements available and ad hoc travel to site operations in Queensland required. The work will cover open cut and underground mining.

Key responsibilities:

- Develop & maintain a 5-year schedule for the Geotechnical function based on the Life of Mine Plan (LOMP) and Steelmaking Coal Operations Management System (OMS).
- Coordinate the implementation of the Anglo American Operating Model (AAOM) including stakeholder engagement between site technical, Brisbane corporate geotechnical and mine planning teams.
- Plan all future work within the next 18 months to ensure that critical projects are scheduled.
- Verify that geotechnical risks to planning, scheduling, budget have been identified and that appropriate action plans are in place.
- Lead geotechnical governance and compliance, including scheduling document reviews and maintaining the geotechnical master schedule.
- Coordination and delivery of geotechnical projects & initiatives across Steelmaking Coal operations.
- Manage the operational aspects of project delivery to ensure the effective and efficient use of systems and processes involved with all phases of the project management model.
- Identify value-adding safety and productivity improvement initiatives for our open cut and underground operations.
- Ensure Geotechnical project work is completed in accordance with Steelmaking Coal’s protocols and procedures, including H&S requirements and change management processes.
- Actively participate in risk assessments and manage risks in execution to satisfy the project requirements.
- Conduct site visits and inspections of project work to ensure Geotechnical project plans are implemented to a high standard.
- Qualifications
- Degree in Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or similar.
- Extensive experience in mining operations.
- Diverse experience across mining methods.
- Experience with project management including basic financial metrics and budgeting tools.
- Experience in scheduling, preferably in a mining or engineering environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience of scheduling and planning tools and software.
- Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills.
