The Technical Officer provides a high standard of technical support and advice to chemistry-based teaching and research programs of the school to ensure that the practical and administrative services are provided in an efficient manner.
The school provides practical teaching programs, postgraduate laboratory-based programs, and research operations the technical officer can provide support and expertise in chemistry, chemical safety procedures, operation of analytical instrumentation, equipment repair and use, waste management and laboratory safety.
The technical officer position provides support to the Technical Services Coordinator and would suit a Chemistry Graduate who is passionate about safety in chemistry, has experience with chemistry specific instrumentation and possess a strong chemical knowledge.
**Your key responsibilities will include**:
- Consulting with available sources to gather relevant technical information and seeking the expertise and advice of other people as appropriate, to provide technical support in the preparation of materials and equipment for delivery of undergraduate practical classes and research experiments
- Ensuring the day-to-day management of Chemistry preparation areas, including maintenance and auditing of a chemical inventory, labelling, management and disposal of dangerous goods
- Understanding local processes, preparing and maintaining standard documents (e.g. Standard Operating Procedures, Safe Work Procedure Risk Assessments, laboratory practical notes), manage records (e.g. SDS Database), regularly tracking progress of work tasks and identify key issues
- Providing technical expertise in the use of a range of general equipment and specialised chemical instrumentation and assist research staff and students in the operations of these instruments/equipment for practical classes or experiments as required
- Providing assistance when required in course practical components to be assessed and redeveloped in conjunction with Unit Co-ordinators to further improve the standards of laboratory practicals provided to students
- Clarifying expectations and responding promptly to resolve technical problems, issues and requirements to ensure client needs are met to agreed standards and timelines
- Generating new ideas and share those ideas with others in the work area to improve process and practice to support service to the school
- Understanding local processes, prepare standard documents, manage records, regularly track progress of work tasks and identify key issues
- Delivering effective and efficient outcomes and outputs against team work plans and deadlines
- Recognising the importance of teamwork and of effective communication among team members and build rapport within immediate team and diverse range of stakeholders in ways that are respectful and inclusive of others
- Presenting information in a clear, structured, concise and tailored way by focusing on key messages and check that messages are understood and meet audience needs
**To be successful, you’ll have**:
- A Bachelor degree in the Chemical Sciences or a related discipline _or_
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
- Experience in a tertiary education teaching laboratory including an understanding of handling Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances.
