The Rural Water Policy team is currently seeking a keen and capable policy practioner to help deliver on interesting and challenging priority projects over the next 12 months. Our team works across a variety of rural water management challenges and opportunities, including those related to socio-economic shifts in irrigated agricultural communities, sustainable water use practices and planning, water recovery under the Murray Darling Basin Plan, intersections with renewable energy investment, and other complex and unique policy issues.

A key priority this Policy Officer role will support is remaking the regulations governing houseboat wastewater management on Victoria's largest irrigation water storage, Lake Eildon, by June 2024. This work is grounded in co-design and involves developing a mosaic of regulatory and non-regulatory interventions matched to risk, working in partnership with Goulburn Murray Water, the houseboating industry and community, and a broad range of agency stakeholders.
Over the next year, this Policy Officer role will also support development of a detailed feasibility study into options for reconfiguring the Broken River water supply system for rural water needs. This study is a central recommendation of the Broken system review 2020-22 and is intended to ensure the local community can understand long-term options for the future of the valley with a trend towards reduced average water availability. It will involve ongoing close consultation with various water entitlement holders, technical experts, and Traditional Owners to identify and assess options.
There will be an opportunity in this role to help set the future strategic priorities of the Rural Water Policy team and to engage with other elements of the team's diverse work program as well as broader water sector intersections. The role is suited to a highly motivated individual who is outcomes driven and able to form and maintain collaborative relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications
- An appropriate tertiary qualification in science, economics, natural resource management, engineering, agriculture or other relevant disciplines is highly desirable.
- Experience working in the Victorian water sector is highly desirable.
- Experience working with regional and rural communities is highly desirable.

This is a fixed term position available until 30 June 2024. The work location for this position 8 Nicholson St, East Melbourne with hybrid work arrangements available.
