The Company

We provide Farrier services to Thoroughbred Racing Trainers at Racing Stables and Cranbourne Training Complex and breaking and spelling properties, and to horse owners at private and agistment properties in Cranbourne, Mornington Peninsula and surrounds.

The Opportunity

We have a full-time position available for an apprentice to join the team of three working Monday to Friday and some Saturdays up until 12pm as required. During your apprenticeship, you will gain on the job experience learning hoof care and shoeing techniques and you will also learn industry specific skills by completing on the job training to obtain your Certificate IV in Farriery.

As an apprentice, you will learn and acquire knowledge and skills working under tutelage of our experienced Farriers. Farriers regularly travel to attend to horses at the locations they service, at times after hours and weekend hours are necessary.

The apprentice’s responsibilities include learning and developing practical skills, participating in classes and workshops on and off site, observing and following all occupational health and safety procedures, completing tests and assignments.

Successful apprentices demonstrate their ability to take pride in their work, respond well to constructive criticism, have good interpersonal skills, build good relationships with colleagues and clients, and demonstrate initiative. Ultimately, these apprentices will make a lasting impression and become a successful tradesperson.

Main Duties:
Maintain tidy workshop and other tasks as directed.

Follow instructions as directed, always ask if uncertain.

Hold and keep horse’s calm.

Ability to confidently handle and respond to horses quickly as horses can become agitated and become unpredictable quickly.

Work quickly, efficiently and tidily.

Tasks will be assigned to your knowledge and skill level.

**Physical Skills**

Ability to cope with the physical demands of the job;
Stamina and strength to work with horses; Good eyesight and hearing;
Good hand-eye coordination;
Awareness of personal and workplace safety measures.

**Horsemanship Skills**

Confidence in handling horses;
Must enjoy working with horses;
Ability to demonstrate initiative and quick thinking in a livestock environment;
Must be paying attention at all times and have the ability to work quickly and handle horses which may at times be unpredictable or agitated.

**Interpersonal Skills**

Dependable Committed to learning and being team oriented;
Good at being an active listener;
Good verbal and written communication skills;
Ability to receive constructive criticism and an openness to learning;
Well organised and able to meet deadlines for both on the job and off the job training requirements.

Personal Attributes:
Minimum junior school certificate;
Ability to speak with clients, suppliers and other employees respectfully and courteously at all times;
Good physical strength and hand-eye co-ordination is required;
Good time management, critical thinking and interpersonal skills;
Positive attitude, passion for learning and a growth mindset.

To be successful in this role you will:
Demonstrate a dedicated willingness to learn.

Be committed to learn the trade with a view to gaining your qualification as a Farrier.

Be honest, disciplined, have a strong work ethic and be reliable, punctual and well presented.

Ability to actively listen, learn and follow instructions is essential.

Demonstrate your ability to communicate with colleagues and clients in a respectful and appropriate manner and have confidence to ask questions.

Preferred not essential:
Certificate II or III in Animal Care Management: Equine Care or Equine studies

Previous experience around horses

Confidence in handling horses

Completed Year 12

Valid Driver’s licence

Own insured vehicle

Required:
To be eligible for an apprenticeship or traineeship you must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or have full working rights.

Speak fluent English.

Static strength: physical ability to routinely lift, push, pull and sustain a bent squat position under a horse throughout the day, every day.

Successful applicants will be required to complete a Pre-employment Medical & Functional Capacity Assessment and Drug and Alcohol test.
