ATSILS is a not-for-profit, community-based organisation that delivers innovative, professional criminal, civil and family law services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients throughout Queensland.
We are 50 years old, and have 250 staff including a specialist Through Care service to complement our legal services. We are fully government funded, and this Legal role is tied to ongoing funding, currently set to 30 June 2025.
Opportunity
You will have frequent opportunity to provide expert information directly to clients, and to external stakeholders about client matters. You can rely on the State-wide resources of the Principal Legal Officer, the Director of Law (Criminal), the Director of Law (Civil) and your immediate legal team.

**Selection Criteria**:
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA (7)

**1. Values**: alignment
to the values and vision of ATSILS and an appreciation of and sensitivity to
the challenges our clients have faced, and continue to face, in their fight for
and their right to justice and equity; and a clear understanding of the issues
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples face when incarcerated.

**2. Qualifications and experience**: Bachelor
of Laws with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a related field with a Queensland Practising Certificate (or ability or promptly acquire one).

**3. Core legal duties**: capacity
to provide high-level client services within the Correctional system, with extensive casework, negotiation, written reporting and research skills.

**4. Client service and data management**:
a) proven
ability to both research and critically analyse legislation, (and associated
policy and proceedings) AND use diplomacy and determination to ensure the
rights of clients are upheld in difficult and challenging situations with
families moving through various coronial, law enforcement, health and custodial
systems;
b) while this role involves working within a small team, you will be required to manage data, correspondence, case files and reporting professionally and with mínimal assistance.
5. Confidence in and knowledge of legislation and key recommendations: an
in-depth working knowledge relevant legislation, such as Coroners Act (2003),
Crime and Misconduct Act, Corrective Services Act (2008), Youth Justice
Act (1992), Royal Commission into the Deaths in Custody of Aboriginals
Report (1991) and a variety of Civil
Law legislation.

**6. Access, teamwork, and communication**: preparedness
to work after hours and travel occasionally to remote or regional offices if necessary; willingness to assist in the development of legal
staff training/education; sound interpersonal and communication
skills, and a willingness to work in Court, Prisons and Youth Detention facilities, and with
other specialist practitioners from time to time.

**7. Mobility, access and safety**:

- a current Queensland Driver Licence and ability to drive in all reasonable

conditions; and willingness to drive our vehicles for work purposes;
- a willingness to undergo a Criminal Record Check to achieve a National Police Certificate (Australia-wide Disclosable Criminal History);
(criminal convictions, prosecution investigations etc.,) that may result in access
prepared to consent to a Criminal History
Check being conducted (if requested). Access to State Correctional/Criminal

**Justice Facilities is essential. Note**: A
criminal history does not automatically preclude selection for interview, and a
preliminary check can be discussed with the Human Resources Manager after a
DESIRABLE CRITERIA (2)
1. Experience in the conduct of complaints
involving clients and prison system personnel.

2. Analysis skills and reporting writing expertise are highly
regarded.
