We are seeking a Café Volunteer baker who has baking background and or passion to bake and provide mentorship to young people 15-24 who are enrolled in our Hospitality course. The café volunteer baker will also provide support to Chef/trainer and Café Supervisor in all café duties including food preparation, making coffees and beverages, serving meals and providing excellent customer services.
The Salvation Army Youth Services offer an integrated suite of programs engaging with young people across Australia. Our services create intentional avenues for young people to explore opportunities, build support networks, and access, participate and contribute to their communities. Youth services provide a diverse range of programs which include housing and homelessness, driver training, education, employment, and training, AOD support, social and community activities, specialist therapeutic responses and youth justice programs.

Key responsibilities
Provide mentorship to young people who are enrolled in Hospitality course.
- Support Chef/Trainer and Café Supervisor in meeting daily outcomes by preparing meals and serving customers.
- Provides quality customer service.
- Assist Chef/Trainer and Café Supervisor with other tasks as directed.
- Clean and hygienic kitchen and surroundings in keeping with health regulations.
- Exhibit professional image of the service, always displaying professionalism and integrity.
- Provide accurate information to customers.
- Refer people to appropriate Salvation Army services.
- Follow up with Chef or Café Supervisor if unsure.
- Listen carefully, and acknowledge and refer concerns, issues, or queries to Supervisor.
Qualifications and skills
- Experience in Hospitality industry preferred.
Capabilities and personal attributes
- Ability to demonstrate a high level of maturity and leadership skills.
- Ability to build rapport with young people.
- Empathetic and understanding approach to working with young people.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to placate complicated or stressful situations.
- Ability to work in a team and autonomously when required.
- Ability to work with professional discretion and confidentiality.
- A respect and willingness to work within the ethos of The Salvation Army
- Previous work experience in the Hospitality industry sector highly desirable
- Knowledge of First Aid
- Background check requirements
Background checks play an important part in our commitment to being a safe organisation. Where an applicant has disclosable history, the selection process includes a fair assessment and a risk management approach. Collection of personal information is handled per our privacy and confidentiality policies. Below is what is required for this role:
- As this role involves dealing with confidential information, it requires a Police Check
- As we are a youth service working with young people, it requires a NSW Working with Children Check (WWC)
Time required and commitment.
2-5 days per week
9am to 3pm
- The Salvation Army is a child safe organisation and is committed to protecting children and young people from harm. All child related roles will require the successful completion of a Working with Children Check. _Additionally, certain volunteer roles may require a National Police Check._
