**2023 Medical Registrar - Advanced Trainee in General Medicine**

Our continued growth has seen the addition of a new purpose built, multi-storey Joan Kirner Women's and Children's at Sunshine Hospital.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified Medical Officers who have:
- passed the FRACP written and clinical examinations
- completed basic physician training
- who would like to pursue Advanced Training in General and Acute Care Medicine in 2023.
Western Health offers a comprehensive advanced training program in General and Acute Care Medicine including for those undertaking dual training in association with another subspecialty. There are rotations for core General Medicine plus a range of rotations in other subspecialties that have previously been accredited as non-general medicine rotations including acute rotations.
The General Internal Medicine Unit operates across the two campuses - Footscray and Sunshine Hospitals. Both hospitals have four inpatient General Internal Medicine inpatient teams and admit over 3,000 patients each a year. Sunshine Hospital has more recently opened a Rapid Admission and Discharge Unit (RADU) to manage our growing population.
There is a senior medical registrar based at both Sunshine and Footscray Hospital. These roles provide managerial support to the General Internal Medicine service at each site and an inpatient consultation service. The senior medical registrar at Sunshine also supports the Obstetric Medicine Service while the senior medical registrar at Footscray works closely with the Director of Physician Education to organise preparation for the RACP written and clinical examinations and coordinate Western Health as a site for the RACP clinical examination.
In 2023 we will be developing General Internal Medicine senior clinical lead roles which will provide clinical oversight and support to the four inpatient teams at each site and to other clinical services. The advanced trainees in General Internal Medicine work closely with the Head of Unit to ensure an efficient and high quality service and to supervise and support junior medical staff. Rotations are also available to other specialty medical units at Western Health.
Six month rotations are offered in the following areas:
- Senior Medical Registrar - Footscray Hospital (including perioperative medicine)
- Senior Medical Registrar - Sunshine Hospital (including obstetric medicine)
- Community Medicine/Complex and Chronic Care
- Obstetric Medicine (working in conjunction with the new obstetric medicine fellow - does not have SOMANZ accreditation at this time)
- Neurology
- Infectious Diseases
- Respiratory Medicine
- Hospital in the Home
- Rapid Admission and Discharge Unit (RADU)
- Intensive Care
- Discussions are also currently underway for possible opportunities in Nephrology and Community Geriatrics for 2023.
The General Internal Medicine Unit is closely associated with the University of Melbourne, Western Clinical School and has an active research program and consultants with experience in supporting productive advanced training projects. There are also opportunities for future higher degree research training projects/PhDs.
