- The position of EL 1 Assistant Director -WHS and Risk Management will be responsible for ensuring alignment with the Department's WHS and Risk Management framework making sure that any changes made at the Departmental level are monitored and actioned promptly. _
- The Assistant Director - WHS and Risk Management will operationalise WHS and Risk Management requirements to improve safety for the workforce and instil risk management so that business decisions lead to better outcomes._
- We are seeking an EL1 with a broad range of experience and abilities, who can operate in a fast paced and changing environment, add value through their interpersonal, analytical, and technical skills, and display drive and initiative to deliver high quality outcomes for the section. Specifically, you will develop a WHS Action Plan and Risk Management Branch Plan and report through the Section Head the status of these plans._

**Who we are**
The Chief Counsel Division is responsible for all legal services required by the Department as well as compliance and enforcement activities to protect National Environmental legislation. We partner with the business areas of the department, the Executive, and the Secretary to identify and manage legal risk across the department and facilitate excellent legal outcomes for our clients. We also work with business, industry, government and the community to understand and improve compliance with national environmental law.

The Environment Compliance Branch provides a centralised compliance and enforcement capability for the Department’s environmental legislation. We work with business, industry, government and the community to understand and improve compliance with national environmental law. The Environment Compliance Branch conducts civil and criminal investigations, collects and analyses environmental intelligence, monitors compliance with environmental approvals, and engages with the community we regulate.

The Compliance Strategy and Planning Section is the central coordination point for the Environment Compliance Branch. The Section develops and implements Branch wide strategies and policies and promotes the adoption of both internal and departmental reforms. The Section provides advice to external agencies on the operational and resourcing requirements of the Branch, manages risk and the Branch's business functions. By responding to departmental requests, the Section coordinates activities including the development of investment bids to support improved ICT systems for the Branch. The Section manages WHS and Risk management requirements on behalf of the Branch, ensuring compliance with the Department's Risk Management Framework, Departmental Policy on WHS, maintaining the Branch's Business Risk Register, and WHS Risk Register, and reporting as required to the Senior Leadership Team.

A critical aspect of the work of the Section is the management of WHS and risk for the Branch. We manage risk by ensuring compliance with the Department’s Risk Management Framework, maintaining the Branch’s Business Risk Register, and reporting as required to the Senior Leadership Team. We are also responsible for managing Branch WHS issues by ensuring compliance with the Departmental Policy on WHS, inputting into WHS committees and managing the Branch’s WHS Risk Register.

**The Job**
If you have a background in WHS and Risk management, qualifications in one or more of these fields will be highly regarded. For this role you will need:

- Awareness and detailed understanding of WHS and Risk management.
- Ability to prepare a range of high-quality documents, learn quickly and adapt to change.
- Possess advanced analytical skills and independent thinking, honesty, and integrity.
- Positive attitude, openness to constructive feedback and creative problem-solving skills.
- Provide advice to management on the extent to which the Branch is meeting its Departmental requirements on WHS and Risk management.
- Performance and other reporting on WHS and Risk management.
- Develop and assess WHS and Risk management plans in line with the Department's WHS and Risk management approach.
- Plan and deliver awareness activities with view to increase awareness in Branch on Risk and WHS.
- Develop relationships with internal stakeholders to support the work of the section, to collect and share useful information on WHS and risk management.
- Contribute to systems, process improvements, and provide guidance and support to the team on WHS and risk management activities.
