**Overview**

The Women's and Children's Hospital provides state of the art health care for women and children in Adelaide and South Australia.

We are the state’s leading provider of specialist care for children with acute and chronic conditions and SA’s largest maternity and obstetric service. We also provides important community-based services.

Each year, more than 30,000 people are admitted and about 5000 babies are born at the hospital. In addition more than 250,000 people come to the hospital as outpatients.

The hospital has 295 beds. The hospital’s paediatric and adolescent wards cater for all paediatric specialties. Women’s wards provide antenatal, gynaecology, neonatal and postnatal care.

We have an exciting full time ongoing position in the Ophthalmology team (part of Division of Surgical Services), commencing as soon as possible.

**Orthoptist - WCHN**

Come and join the Women’s and Children’s Hospital ophthalmology department Outpatient clinics run Monday - Friday, with clinic times between 8.50am - 5.30pm, some community screening clinics may require earlier start times due to travel to offsite clinics.

We are a close-knit, multidisciplinary team led by our Consultant Ophthalmologists plus we have Optometrists, Junior Medical Staff including Registrar and an RMO, Outpatient Nurses, Administrators and work closely with many other departments to provide high quality, evidence-based eye care to the children of South Australia.

The orthoptists play a key role in the day to day running of the paediatric ophthalmology department. Service provision includes assessment of; age-appropriate visual acuity utilising logMAR and crowding/confusion bars, squint assessment, eye movement assessment and diagrammatic recording, binocular function testing, intraocular pressure and optic nerve functions by using a wide range of testing modalities.

Orthoptists will routinely perform ophthalmology imaging including using Humphrey Fields (HFA3), Zeiss Cirrus OCT, Zeiss Clarus widefield photographs and slit lamp imaging (Haag Streit IM900).

Orthoptists at WCH are involved in a range of outpatient clinics;
- **Consultant-led clinics -** orthoptists perform workups for patients with a wide range of conditions. Orthoptists are expected to have enough clinical knowledge to perform appropriate investigations prior to the attendance of medical staff.
- **Sub-Specialist clinics -** we have a range of quaternary level clinics running regularly including Oculoplastics, Paediatric Uveitis, Ocular Oncology/Retinoblastoma and a new Retina clinic starting in 2023.
- **Orthoptic Review clinic -** orthoptists assess and manage patients with amblyopia, refractive error, strabismus or conditions that may affect visual acuity or development.
- **Orthoptic Imaging clinic -** orthoptists perform a range of imaging assessments including visual fields, OCTs, fundus photographs and slit lamp imaging for patients attending consultant or registrar-led clinics on another date
- **Refraction clinic -** working alongside the optometrist, orthoptists assess patients who are in the final phase of amblyopia or refractive error treatment and work with the optometrist to decide who should be discharged.
- **Outreach Vision Screening clinic -** orthoptists attend CaFHS centres in the northern suburbs performing secondary vision screening on children who have failed their Kindy Vision Screening check
- **Orthoptic Triage clinic -** orthoptists assess patients who have been referred into WCH, to gain more specific information about any eye condition present.
- **Paediatric Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) clinic** will be starting in 2023, allowing young children to have oral fluorescein or older children having IV fluorescein, instead of requiring anaesthetic or going elsewhere in Adelaide to have these tests performed.
- **Contact Lens Education -** orthoptists teaching families and older patients, how to insert/remove, clean and generally manage contact lenses in the home and school environment.
- **Cataract Support -** a new service being developed at WCHN in 2023, orthoptists will be spending time with families of young children with unilateral cataract, prior to their surgery, assisting them in understanding what challenges and vision management is ahead of them. Getting parents and families ready to undertake these treatments, with emphasis on early intervention for best vision outcomes.
