At NIKERI Institute, Deakin University staff in Education (Early Years) are engaged in dialogue and inquiry related to contemporary thinking in the early childhood education and the community sector. NIKERI staff in Education (Early Years) are supporting the professional practice of early years educators to enhance their work with young children. To do this, they establish strong collaborative respectful partnerships with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, early childhood educators across the sector, as well as with other professionals working with children and families. We identify core business of staff as relational pedagogies at the heart of good learning and teaching to support students to draw on their knowledges and experiences by providing Indigenous context in teaching and scaffolding co created strength-based strategies for self-direction, empowerment and sovereignty to support students’ progression and success.

The position in Early Education will be actively involved in teaching, some research, maintaining links with industry partnerships, and professional communities to promote the Institute and progress our strategic direction. The appointee will make an independent contribution to the Institute’s teaching and program development. The successful appointee will interact with other staff within the School and the Faculty, their peers from other universities, both nationally and internationally and with local Community, professional and industry organisations. The person will be expected to liaise with students at all levels

**Your key responsibilities will include**:

- Develop learning environments that are flexible, student-centred, and accessible, utilising appropriate technology and delivering effective teaching practices within the unit.
- Participating with NIKERI Institute colleagues in developing and maintaining links and partnerships with industry and the relevant professional bodies and the community to integrate industry, theory and practice to teaching and learning.
- Contributing to the Faculty’s undergraduate teaching program that is consistent with the Institute’s, Faculty’s and University’s strategic plan and core commitments.
- Undertaking teaching related duties consistently with the University’s principles of teaching, learning and the student experience that includes participating in moderation, providing relevant and timely feedback aligned to assessment tasks and rubrics.
- Work collaboratively as part of a teaching team that includes awareness of student support and services to connect students to resources that enable whole of student approach where appropriate.
- Develop and deliver effective learning materials and activities that also includes First Nations pedagogy in consultation with the support and guidance from more senior academic staff.
- Constructively reviews and refines own teaching practice to help maintain teaching quality standards.
- Suggest approaches, including culturally appropriate design, adaptive learning materials and activities to innovate teaching practices to improve student success and engagement.

**Key selection criteria for this role**:

- Degree in a relevant discipline and/or other relevant qualifications and experience in Education (Early Years).
- A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures and an understanding of contemporary issues.
- A demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively, including the requirement for culturally appropriate ways in which to negotiate, consult and teach Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ on matters relevant to the delivery of education services.
- One year’s academic employment experience in an Australian university preferred (excluding a continuing academic appointment) and or extensive experience in Education.
- Experience in the field, community engagement and administration.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues.
- Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with First Nations community, industry and or government.
