**Appointments to the Victims Advisory Board**

The Justice and Community Safety Directorate is seeking expressions of interest from members of the community interested in being recommended for appointment to the Victims Advisory Board.

There are currently five anticipated vacancies on the Board. Appointments to the Board are made by the Minister for Human Rights.

The _Victims of Crime Act 1994 _establishes the Victims Advisory Board, whose role is to advise the Minister on policies, priorities and strategies for the acknowledgement, protection and promotion of the interests of victims in the administration of justice. The Board may also, if asked by the Minister, help develop and maintain protocols and procedures for the treatment of victims by agencies involved in the administration of justice.

Members of the Board are appointed to represent the interests of specified groups. The anticipated vacancies are as follows:

- Two vacancies for individuals who, in the Minister’s opinion, represent the interests of victims services groups;
- Two vacancies for individuals of different gender who, in the Minister’s opinion represent the interests of Indigenous communities; and
- One vacancy for an individual who is a lawyer.

These members must be employed, practise or live in the ACT and must not be employed in the ACT Public Service.

ACT Government agencies involved in the criminal justice system are also represented on the Board.

Meetings are generally held at least twice per year. Members are required to:

- Attend all meetings or arrange a representative;
- Present ideas and participate in discussions; and
- Work collaboratively to promote the interests of and achieve better outcomes for victims of crime in the ACT justice system.

Appointments will be for a period not longer than three years.

An appointed member holds the position on a part-time basis a for a period of no longer than three years.
