About the Role
- There is some exposure to structural heart disease procedures (TAVR, TMVRr and ASD/PFO closure programs) however the primary focus of the position for first year Fellow's is on attaining competency in percutaneous coronary intervention. In some years however there may be a separate Structural Heart Disease Fellow.
- The Fellow oversees the day-to-day operation of the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory and provides medical services to all patients presenting to the hospital, both inpatient and outpatient services within the designated unit of the Department of Cardiology.
- On request, the Fellow should provide a consultative service to other departments. It is expected that the Fellow will be involved in the professional development of junior medical staff, clinical audits, research and in the education of medical students.
- Annual procedures include >3000 diagnostic coronary angiograms, >1000 PCI's, >100 TAVR's, mitral valve interventions (including TMVEER, TMVR), and percutaneous PFO/ASD/VSD/PVL closures. The overall interventional cardiology program co-exists with a high volume, high quality on-site cardiac surgical program (650-700 open heart surgical procedures per year).
- In addition, provide professional leadership within a specialist medical area and provide training, education and supervision to junior medical staff and other health care members.
