We are seeking a dedicated and motivated professional to join the Bureau of Meteorology’s Defence Weather Services (DWS) team as a Defence Decision Support Meteorologist - Leave Relief.
These roles provide occupants with the opportunity to backfill leave and operational requirements and it is expected that these roles will lead to the development of a strong knowledge of local and global environmental intelligence. These roles will initially focus on military aviation leave relief at the DWSOs, however there will be the opportunity to also provide leave relief for the Meteorological Intelligence Support Team (MIST), and on site for ADF exercises.
Travel for leave relief will generally take place in 1-6 week blocks. Non-leave relief periods will be occupied through project work to support Defence-related service provision. This may include design and/or delivery of training, development of meteorological products, forecasting resources, or project management. In addition, the DWS highly encourages personal upskilling through cross Bureau training and development.
Defence Decision Support Meteorologists work in a dynamic and customer focused environment and are responsible for building and maintaining close working relationships with operational ADF units and personnel. As a member of a small office the successful applicant will also need to build strong and trusting relationships with colleagues, while being able to work independently. Excellent communication and time management skills will be required.
The successful applicant will be required to provide timely and valuable meteorological advice to ensure safe operations so that the ADF can use the weather to their operational advantage. Working under forecast policy, the Defence Meteorologist will prepare and issue forecasts and warnings, specific to ADF requirements, maintain a meteorological watch and amendment service and take meteorological observations. Confidence in making independent meteorological decisions will be required, together with the ability to know when and how to reach out for support.
