Role Summary
As the Sleep Technician you are responsible for undertaking best practice delivery of overnight, comprehensive polysomnography (PSG) testing, analysis and associated interventions. This position is responsible for setting up and maintaining the sleep study rooms ahead of and after testing, and assisting patients during all testing procedures. The position is required to work closely with other Sleep Technicians and Sleep Scientists to ensure the rostered lists are completed in a timely and professional manner in line with GenesisCare standards of patient care. To be successful in this role, you need the ability to be proactive, anticipate needs and action them accordingly, have a high attention to detail and take pride in delivering consistently accurate and high quality work
Key areas for the role:
- High quality patient care
- Set-up and overnight monitoring of diagnostic polysomnography studies
- Perform overnight CPAP titrations and other therapies as required
- Equipment care and calibration
Reporting lines:
As the Sleep Technician, you report directly to the Technical Services Team Leader. You have no direct reports.
Your key responsibilities:
Technical Duties
Adhere to the Overnight Laboratory PSG Procedure and relevant work instructions including but not limited to:
- Equipment care and calibration
- Pre-examination procedures including orientating the patient to the sleep investigation unit, explaining sleep study procedures and performing routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting and patient education.
- Accurately complete and verify GSC/hospital documentation including collection, review and integration of patient information in order to determine testing parameters and meet the patient-specific needs
- Verifying signal quality including identification and reporting of signal abnormalities and performing troubleshooting procedures
- Overnight monitoring and attending to the patient
- Follow infection control procedures for all equipment
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognise and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of paediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Conduct sleep study analysis (scoring) or other technical or administrative duties as required during the time allocated for the overnight PSG procedure
- Conduct daytime sleep studies as required
Customer Service, Communication & Team Work
- Provide quality customer service by acting in the best interest of the patients at all times.
- Promote and maintain a positive organisational image and good customer relations.
- Act upon direction from management & senior staff
- Communicate and liaise appropriately with customers, all GenesisCare staff, Genesis Care representatives and other external parties as required in order to effectively treat patients referred to the service.
- Provide leadership and supervision to trainee Sleep technicians
- Demonstrate and promote positive work practices and professionalism through appropriate personal behaviour.
- Promote and maintain a positive organisational image and good community relations.
General Accountabilities
- Adhere to relevant National and State Health standards, applicable laws, regulations, guidelines.
- Adhere to relevant company policies and procedures that are relevant to the performance of the duties specified in this job description including the Genesis Care Code of Conduct.
- Attend and participate in various programs and meetings i.e. Quality improvement, Infection Control, Occupational Health and Safety, Performance Management Program, team meetings as directed.
- Maintain essential certifications through attendance of annual ALS, fire safety, manual handling and other mandatory courses as directed.
- Participate in equipment care and maintenance.
Your key working relationships:
As the Sleep Technician, you need to develop strong relationships with the following internal parties:
- Sleep Scientists
- Patient Services Officers
In addition, you need to develop strong external relationships with various individuals/agencies/key stakeholders.
**Experience**:
- Completed relevant degree level qualification with strong course emphasis in human physiology, nursing or sleep science; or demonstrated competence in the performance of duties performed as a Trainee Sleep Technician over a period of twelve (12) months continuous service at a GC sleep unit (or equivalent).
- Current CPR and Blue Card certification
- High standard of computer proficiency
