**Key role of this position**
The Occupational Safety and Health Advisor supports the Division implement, improve and adhere to the requirements of the client’s Safety Management System and comply with Occupational Safety and Health legislation.
- The position promotes Safety and Health in a collaborative and informative manner working alongside employees and contractor across the Division by providing support and advice, conducting audits and investigations, and assisting personnel to develop knowledge and understanding of safety and health matters.**Core duties and responsibilities**

**Safety and Health**
- Supports strategic direction, planning and performance ensuring understanding of expectations and standards.
- Works collaboratively with management, staff and contractors to support the implementation of the Safety Management System (SMS).
- Provides advice to the Division on safety and health matters and through various communication means to assist personnel to meet their requirements outlined in the SMS.
- Undertakes project coordination, including the development, implementation and evaluation of OSH programs with the priority being the client's Safety Milestone Program.
- Develops relevant communications in conjunction with the Corporate Communications Branch in relation to newsletter articles, OSH bulletins, and event management.
- Coordinates and assists with the functions of the OSH Committee, Safety and Health representatives and first aid officers.
- Coordinates and/or undertakes individual ergonomic assessments.
- Encourages a safety culture within the Division by providing technical knowledge, practical assistance and relevant safety education including delivering awareness sessions.
- Investigates OSH incidents, hazards and risks and implements control strategies to reduce risk of injury or disease
- Undertakes risk assessments, audits and safety inspections to ensure compliance with legislation.
- Assists with research on OSH policies and procedures based on best practice principles.
- Maintains the Division’s safety system documentation including policies, procedures, JSA’s and work instructions and develops statistical reports, OSH reports and Division updates as required

**Stakeholder relationships**
- Provides a positive, proactive and professional advisory service to managers, employees.
- Provides mentoring and leadership to others in relation to safety and health matters.

**Continuous Improvement**
- As a member of the quality and risk team, participates in the on-going review of the client’s Risk Management Policy in line with best practice developments.
- Supports developments in the area of safety management and health programs to ensure continuous improvement of safety management systems.
- Identifies opportunities and improvements to processes, procedures and policies within the area of responsibility to ensure continuous improvement of working practices.

**Other**
- Liaises with functional and operational areas and other relevant government agencies on OSH matters as required.
- Undertakes other duties as required.

**Core Competencies**
- Relevant experience in OSH issues in a rail and/or operational environment, including the ability to assist in provision of advice in the workplace.
- Possession of or progress towards a relevant tertiary qualification.
- Demonstrated experience interpreting and implementing contemporary Safety Management Systems and processes.
