Post-Doctoral Position with ANU and CSIRO to research Indigenous catchment cultural values, and Indigenous knowledge for flood mitigation

**Overview**

An exciting career opportunity working with ANU, CSIRO and Indigenous communities to undertake research on local Indigenous catchment cultural values, and Indigenous knowledge for flood mitigation and effectiveness in the Richmond River Catchment in the Norther Rivers:

- A joint appointment between the ANU School of Culture, History and Language, the ANU Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions (ICEDS), and CSIRO Environment.
- Undertake independent research, engaging with Indigenous Elders, Indigenous communities and Land Councils, to understand their values, needs and perspectives
- Become part of a dynamic team with a positive culture addressing climate change adaptation

ICEDS has recently commenced a national initiative funded by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) - Partnering with local communities in regional Australia to increase resilience to flood risk. A key objective is to partner with regional communities to develop Australian guidelines for integration of nature-based approaches to flood resilience. The ANU School of Culture, History and Language is dedicated to investigating and learning with and about the people, languages, and lands of Asia and the Pacific. This project will be undertaken in parallel with a CSIRO flood study funded by NEMA, which is developing hydrological and hydrodynamic models and scenarios for flood mitigation in the Richmond River catchment in NSW Northern Rivers region.

**The Position**

ANU is seeking a Post-Doctoral Fellow who will be part of an interdisciplinary team.

This Post-Doctoral Fellow’s research will be focussed in the Richmond River Catchment where record floods have caused catastrophic loss and damage. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will research (1) the local Indigenous cultural values and how to include these when flood mitigation options are developed and (2) Indigenous knowledge of solutions to flood risk. The position is a joint appointment between the ANU Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions (ICEDS), the ANU School of Culture, History and Language, and CSIRO Environment. The position is also closely aligned with the new Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures. This Centre expects to make a legacy contribution by developing complementary Indigenous and Western knowledge frameworks for modelling environmental, cultural, and historical change in Australia over the last millennium and into the future.
