**POSITION OVERVIEW**:

- Canberra Hospital is a busy tertiary hospital in the nation’s capital that provides high quality, comprehensive health care to the people of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and surrounding regions of New South Wales. It is the principal teaching facility of the Australian National University Medical School and the ANU rural clinical school. Canberra is also the home of excellence in research with the world class John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR).- Canberra Hospital is a 500 bed institution and provides services in Haematology, Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Medicine, Geriatrics, Infectious Diseases, Immunology, Neonatology, Nephrology, Neurology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Paediatric Surgery, Psychiatry, Pathology, Respiratory Medicine, General Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, ICU, Hospital in the home and Medical Imaging. It also has medical (MAPU) and surgical (SAPU) short stay units. Solid organ transplantation is not provided.-
**DUTIES**:

- Report haematological morphology (including bone marrow and blood films), flow cytometry, specialised coagulation and other haematology laboratory tests under the supervision of the haematologists
- Provide guidance to clinicians on appropriate use and interpretation of haematology laboratory investigations and transfusion support
- Provide support to the laboratory, under consultant supervision, for selecting appropriate investigational approaches, reporting of laboratory tests and liaison with referring clinicians
- Participate in bone marrow biopsy procedure lists, multidisciplinary clinico
- pathological meetings (lymphoma and leukaemia) and haematology clinics which may occur in Cancer and Ambulatory Support (CAS), or regional sites in SENSW. Participation in quality management processes is essential. Attendance and participation in laboratory management meetings is considered important.
- Participate in the after-hours haematology unit on call registrar roster that covers the ward and laboratory
- Maintain currency in an Advanced Life Support Course
- Teaching and professional development activities are considered a major part of the department’s activities and the appointee will be required to actively participate in weekly clinical and laboratory meetings, the hospital grand rounds program, a departmental journal club, medical student supervision and teaching and tutoring of basic physician trainees at Canberra Hospital.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

**ABOUT YOU**:
**Behavioural Capabilities**
- Demonstrated clinical competence and sound knowledge in haematology at a level commensurate with postgraduate years. Provide commitment to further training in haematology including success in the Part 1 RCPA exams in the 2nd lab year.
- Demonstrated commitment to work collaboratively in a clinical and laboratory team.
- Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development including formal education and self-directed learning.
- Possession of sound written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to participate in the haematology unit on call roster.
- Current Basic Life Support skills and Advanced Life Support skills.
- Demonstrated ability to consistently display commitment to, compliance with and leadership in high quality Customer Service, Equity and Diversity, Occupational Health and Safety and Industrial Democracy principles and practices and relevant legislation to these areas, and an understanding of and commitment to ACT Health values.
