THE ROLE

Australian Astronomical Optics - Macquarie (AAO-Macquarie) is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Mechanical Technician / highly skilled CNC machine operator to provide specialist technical support for the delivery of instrumentation projects and the operational running of the AAO workshop and laboratories.

Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Manager and under the guidance of the Mechanical Workshop Supervisor, you will:
- Operate CNC machines, drill presses, grinders, lathes, mills and other machines to fabricate and modify parts.- Work collaboratively with other teams to resolve technical challenges and develop innovative solutions to resolve problems- Work collaboratively with engineers and other technical staff to refine concepts, system and subsystem level, and component designs for instrument projects, with particular regard to manufacturing, servicing and cost optimisations- Analyse test results in relation to design or defined specifications and test objectives.- Evaluate mechanical parts against original specifications for form and function.- Assist with instrument commissioning tests at the telescope.- Contribute to project planning and delivery through the project life cycle including ensuring that scheduling, design, testing or production issues are raised- Contribute to the safe operation of all tools and systems, and personnel in theAAO Workshop (and on remote sites) including WHS matters and development of appropriate procedures.

About You

You will be a qualified fitter and turner or similar with advanced skills in CNC programming and machining (Hypermil or Mastercam), be mechanically minded and have excellent communication skills and ability to build sound working relationships. You will possess a positive and proactive mindset alongside the ability to self-manage. Your technical expertise, analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to work effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders will enable you to succeed.

Salary package: Level 6 from $88,589 to $97,787 p.a., plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading.
