The Commemorations Branch delivers DVA’s work under Outcome 3. It:

- leads and manages the delivery of national and international commemorative services;
- provides support for community awareness and the preservation of Australia’s wartime and service heritage and veterans’ experiences; and
- constructs and maintains national memorials overseas.

There are 4 teams in the Branch. They are:
**Community Engagement**
Community Engagement Team collects and shares veterans’ stories and experiences of service, to increase the community’s awareness of our rich history. It provides advice on Australia's military history, produces educational resources, and runs the Anzac Portal website. The team also manage the legislation and permit/compliance regime around using the word ‘Anzac’. The team has 3 discrete sections to manage this work: Education, History, and Portal.

**Commemorative Events**
Commemorations is responsible for the planning and delivery of domestic and international commemorative services. The section covers a number of responsibilities including event Operations and Logistics, Communications and Engagement and Support Services and Finance.

**Overseas Projects**
Constructs and maintains national memorials overseas. This section is responsible for managing significant stakeholder relationships with contractors, locally engaged staff and larger agencies, including the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Work in the Overseas Projects section includes contract, project and financial management.

**Sir John Monash Centre**
Opened in 2018 and set on the grounds of the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery in northern France, and adjacent to the Australian National Memorial, the Sir John Monash Centre is a cutting-edge multimedia centre that tells Australia’s story of the Western Front in the words of those who served.

We are seeking a Masters or PhD qualified APS6 Historian to work within the Community Engagement’s History Team. The History Team creates commemorative and historical resources to share with the broader community, to raise awareness of the diverse experiences of Australian military service. The Team supports the entire department, departmental executive, and the Minister in this work, and provides departmental services including speech writing, fact checking, and professional guidance on representing military history matters. The History Team also runs projects and programs, such as a veterans’ oral history project, VC and VCfA travel program, and a program researching, drafting and publishing books on Australia’s wartime history.

The key duties of the position include:

- Contribute to the Team’s work in creating and reviewing material for Ministers, executive and the community, to increase their understanding of Australian service.
- Manage competing priorities and projects with fixed deadlines (eg. tied to commemorative anniversaries), while producing high quality and accurate products.
- Collaborate and engage with stakeholders to promote and improve DVA's history offerings.
- Provide expert advice to your section, manager, the branch and executive.
- Ensure projects meet all financial and administrative regulations (eg. procurement is in accordance with appropriate requirements).
- Mentor staff, and build capability as required.
- Provide expert advice to the Minister's Office.

Eligibility
- Applicants must be an Australian citizen to apply.
- A Masters or PhD qualification focusing on 20th century Australian history, preferably with a focus on Australian military history.

A merit pool of suitable applicants may be created which may be used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies should they become available over the next 18 months.
