**About Neonatal Services**

As a state-wide leader in neonatal services, each year we care for up to 2,000 premature and unwell babies from across Victoria in our Neonatal intensive care and special care nursery.

The neonatal team provides a family-centred care approach including the introduction of Family Intergrated Care (FiCare) mid 2024 as part of the "Stronger Together Project".

Neonatal Services at The Women’s Hospital, Melbourne has up to 62 beds, including neonatal intensive care and special care pods. It is one of the largest nurseries in Australia. As a state-wide leader in neonatal services, each year we care for up to 2000 babies premature and unwell babies in our Neonatal intensive care and special care nursery each year from across Victoria. These babies may be premature or unwell full-term infants with a range of neonatal conditions such as preterm birth congenital anomalies, respiratory disease, birth trauma, peri partum hypoxic, brain injury and metabolic disorders.

The unit also has a key role in providing education and training for local, national and international health professionals as well as an extensive research program.

Clinical placement is offered to participants undertaking a postgraduate in neonatal intensive care nursing course through Latrobe University or the University of Melbourne. Acceptance into the program will be in conjunction with a paid clinical position at The Women’s Hospital, Melbourne Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

**Intake dates: Possible Mid Year intake 2024 and Early 2025 intake**

Postgraduate Studies in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing is a 12 -18 month program (graduate certificate) for registered nurse and midwives who wish to undertake postgraduate studies in neonatal intensive care.

**Entry Requirements**:

- Minimum 12 months recent acute nursing or midwifery experience
- Registered with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (AHPRA), with current eligibility to practice
- Meet the eligibility and entry requirements for postgraduate study through Latrobe University or University of Melbourne
- Be a permanent resident or citizen of Australia

**Program Outline**:
Theory will be provided by either Latrobe University or University of Melbourne. Clinical experience and practical support will be provide by The Women’s Hospital.

**Clinical Support includes**:

- Hospital Orientation
- Supernumerary Orientation into Special Care Nursery
- Supernumerary Orientation into the High Dependency Unit
- Supernumerary Orientation into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Study Days / tutorial at The Women’s Hospital
- Clinical Support provided by the Clinical Nurses Educators and Clinical Support Nurses

**Associated Cost**: Full Fees as deemed by Latrobe University or University of Melbourne, Scholarships may be available within The Women’s Hospital.

In line with the Health Services Amendment (Mandatory Vaccination of Healthcare Workers) Act 2020, some health care workers are now required to have their flu vaccination to work in health care. Evidence of vaccination is required.
