**Where you'll be working**
Health Protection NSW works to prevent exposure to, and minimise impact of, infectious and environmental hazards. HPNSW works closely with public health units in local health districts in the development, implementation and evaluation activities to protect public health.

**About this role**
Reporting to the Chief Health Officer, Health Protection NSW is responsible for surveillance and public health response in NSW including monitoring the epidemiology of notifiable infectious diseases and taking appropriate action to prevent, control and minimise the impact of these diseases. It also provides public health advice and response to environmental issues affecting human health.

The Communicable Diseases Branch focuses on the strategic response to a range of infectious diseases that are of risk to public health., including vaccine preventable diseases, respiratory viruses, tuberculosis, blood borne viruses, sexually transmissible infections and other notifiable conditions. The Branch works in close collaboration across Health Protection NSW branches.

The Applied Epidemiologist/Policy Analyst is located in Health Protection NSW (HPNSW), within the Communicable Diseases Branch. The role is responsible for providing high-level technical expertise and strategic advice in relation to communicable disease control, with a strong focus on communication with the Public Health Network and other relevant partners. The Applied Epidemiologist/Policy Analyst will use sound epidemiological principles to analyse the impact of prevention and control policies, develop and refine strategies to maximise the outputs of policies programs and provide high-level advice to the public health network and key stakeholders. The position works closely across branches to develop and implement processes and procedures for state-wide surveillance and reporting. This position will also provide cross-branch advice and may be placed within any Health Protection unit to meet business needs.

**Selection Criteria**
- Postgraduate qualifications in public health, applied epidemiology or related discipline and/or relevant experience.
- Extensive experience in the investigation and control of public health issues; experience in the management of outbreak investigations is desirable.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in policy development and review including the provision of expert policy advice and recommendations on complex public health issues.
- High-level conceptual and analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex information rapidly and accurately.
- Good organisational skills and capacity to deliver high quality products within agreed timeframes.
- Strong inter-personal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrated experience in working effectively independently and with stakeholders with competing priorities to achieve mutual outcomes and meet deadlines.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with demonstrated experience in plain English communication; experience in scientific writing for publications in peer-reviewed jo
