**Why Your Role Matters**

The Radiation Safety Specialist leads and maintains the UNSW Radiation Safety Management System, which includes radiation safety programs, procedures, and improvement measures. This role is responsible for ensuring radiation hazards are identified and risk are effectively managed in consultation with stakeholders. The Radiation Safety Specialist will provide up-to-date specialist advice to staff and students and facilitate safe work practices across all areas of UNSW to improve organisational outcomes and targets. The role will also be expected to carry out tasks and advise on matters related to both generalist safety and radiation safety.

The role reports to the Manager Safety Systems and has no direct reports.

**Who you are**
- Tertiary qualification in relevant scientific discipline or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience. A background in microbiology, biosafety, hazard management or similar experience is highly desirable.
- Sound knowledge of Radiation Safety Act 1999, Australian legislation, ISO, Australian Standards, Codes of Practice, and industry best practices in radiation safety.
- Strong understanding of radiation safety and radiation protection including terminology and experience working in a laboratory environment, including laboratory safety. Experience in developing and managing radiation safety and radiation protection programs in large organisation such as a hospital, university or research institutions is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated experience in the provision of accurate and high-quality advice that interprets and discusses policies and regulatory requirements.
- Sound IT skills and experience using management systems with demonstrated initiative and a high level of self-motivation.
- Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and consultation skills, with demonstrated success working both as part of a team and independently using judgement and initiative within the overall context of the relevant legislation, approvals and work procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to liaise and interact effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrated experience in collecting and analysing data and preparing reports.
